reverse sound
i was just wondering does that annoying whining sound when you reverse change when you get a new exhaust set up or other work done,,cuz my engines running bone stock due to lack of money and that reverse sound is killing me,,sounds like a radio controlled hamster

The reverse sound has nothing to do with the exhaust. Just deal with it, every car with a stick does it. You shouldn't be going that far or fast in reverse anyway.

To make a long story short, the reverse gear in a manual transmission consists of a series of spur gears (see the link for a pic) whereas the forward gears are helical. The whirring noise you hear is just the teeth on the spur gears colliding, nothing to worry about, it is a normal occurence in all manual trannies.

on *most* street cars, the gears are helical cut. this reduces the whining noise you describe at the expense of hardness (ie they are eaiser to gring/break). Reverse gears (as well as real racing cars in ALL their gears) have "dog cut" gears (ie straight up and down instead of slanted like the hellical cut). These are, of course stronger, but make a lot more noise. I think it would be pimp as hell to have that noise in all the gears, but thats just me.

it would be nice to have it if it were a deeper noise,,but the whine gets to me,,i dont spend to much time in reverse but it just urks me,,oh yea and thanks joe, i never stop learning around here
