dyno related question: drivetrain loss

Can somebody plz explain exactly what it means and if it's related to the friction from the tires running on the rollers...

I have been told percentage figures anywhere from 12% to 18% with regards to drivetrain loss. Why is there not one accepted number? i have several ideas about it but not entirely sure...

First, it means that you don't get to use all of an engine's energy for propulsion. Some of it is used to turn the engine and transmission, drive the accessories and the axles, which in turn creates friction, which in turn saps some of this energy and yes, some of it is lost to plain old friction against the road, or in the case of a dyno, the rollers.

Second, there's no agreed-upon number because all cars are different in terms of engine layout, gearing, number and type of engine-driven accessories, tuning, and efficiency.

Even cars of the same type and layout have different net power outputs.

Hope that clears it up a bit.

The average drivetrain loss is between 10% and as high as 25% although usually falls in around 15%

Very true. Even the weight of the rims will affect the outcome of the at wheels horsepower.
