you take your car into the shop? I haven't done this before, but I never had a car worth worrying about. I'm dropping it off to be tinted tomorrow and picking it up on Wed. night, and it will be locked up, but I really don't trust the bums at the detail shop. I'm not really worried, but I wonder if they'll take my car tearing around town. I thought if I record the Odometer and reset the trip od. to 0, and TELL THEM, that would be enough, but is there another way to booby trap it just to make sure? I'm not going to drive it around until there's no gas, I could get to Indy and back before that happened, but what else is there, and am I right for not trusting them? I saw a valet in Chicago go tearing down Michigan Ave in some poor guys Mercedes, burning out at the light after the guy went into the restaurant and stuff, and ever since, I don't think I'd trust anyone, but sometimes, you need to let your car out of your sight.

Why not try one of the steering wheels locks? They don't need to drive your car while tinting so that would take care of the problem or one of those brake locks. You go also give the the spare plastic key that only opens the doors but that would sort of cause problems when having to move the car in and out of the garage? This would only work if you would be able to park the car in the garage and not have to move it but they will probably have the other cars coming in.

Take a picture of the odometer, thats more failsafe than writing it down

Umm if this particular car is a civic I am not sure if someone would really wanna take it for a joy ride. Maybe they would but I think it would be fun if you took some rich smucks car for a joy ride.

I don't really even like giving the dealer the keys to it. Its just one of those things about it being my $17000.
I knew some guys who worked for the GM dealer network here in town.... They will smoke the tires off of anything. Even a 92 HP Saturn. Remember, IT ISN'T THEIRS. But I seriously doubt I'll have a problem, I got sent there by a few friends who had tints done there and they're all happy. I would lock something up, but they're gonna have to move it when they're done, It won't take the whole day to tint it. I'm sure it will be fine.

shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to do a tint job, but if you have to leave it over night give them the valet key.

when my sister got her windows tinted we setup a date/time for the tinting and just sat there waiting for it to be done ^.- so they couldn't go around tearing up the streets because we were there

I recorded mileage when my car was in the bodyshop for 2 weeks. Through everything, they added one whole mile (probably driving it between the storage lot and what not). As for tinting, I say go ahead and write it down before you leave. Maybe you should schedule an appointment at a convenient time for you, therefore you won't have to leave it there all day.

I would, but I leave for work by 6 am, and don't usually get home until 5-530... So no one is open. And I'm always busy on saturdays, and I need my car.

Here is my horror story. I dropped my car off to get the bumper repainted at the Honda service department. When I picked it up, it had over 90km extra on it and under 1/2 tank left on 229km(I put in 20 L worth of gas to fill it up). So, someone took it for a joy-ride and bagged it bad! I right away told the Honda service manager and he said that it wasn't his shop that did it. They contract out their work to a body shop, so, the body shop picks up and drops off the car. So, none of his employees added the mileage but he couldn't believe 90km because the shop was only a 20-30km round trip. He ended up phoning the shop and inquiring about the car. The guy who drove it wasn't there, so, no answers. To make things better, the manager gave me a free fill-up to pay for my gas and was going to talk to the owner about this. So, next time I take my car in, he'll fill me in on the details.

Bottom line is, always record your mileage on your odometer when you take it in to a shop! That way, you have proof and means to make a complaint. I recorded my mileage this time and was glad I did. Now, I have to keep my paper work just in case I get a photo-radar ticket or something. However, what can I get re-imbursed for/payment for the joy-ride they took?
