Mazdaspeed Protege

Noodleboy, the fact that Ford now owns Mazda led to Mazda using Ford replacement parts in their design. This I learned while shopping around for a car last year (I was thinking of a Protege5, even though I loved the design and features, just couldn't get over it being a Mazda).
It might be true what 01Coupe says about Protege being made by/with Japanese Mazda parts, but I think since Protege5 is a US model it is built with as many Ford parts as possible (to save money from importing).[hr]

The Protege5 is not a US model. Mazda has been selling it in Japan and Europe since beginning of 2000 under the Familia name. It is brought over to America in late 2001. Hence it's a short live model over here but in sync with the typical Japanese four year model cycle in other market.
It's true that the next Protege (and the new Volvo S40) will be sharing the Focus plattform, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It seems that the European version of the Focus is no where near as problematic as the one we have here eventhough the design is identical. The Focus isn't a bad car if it weren't for all the recalls it had.
