crap gas mileage
good for all of you getting 31+ MPG...
my fuel light came on last night, 256 miles since the last fill-up. i stopped at mobil, and the damn thing took 10.5 gallons!
2001 LX with an auto, stock 14" tires, and never before have i had any problems with fuel efficiency. i don't remember driving TOO harshly... and the only mod under the hood is i replaced the intake resonator with a 3" aluminum pipe hooked up to the fenderwell. i've had this setup for 6,000+ miles, no trouble 'til now.
all i can say is WTF!? we'll see how it does on THIS tankful... now that i'll be paying attention...

Search newb...er I mean Senior Member. I've read many posts like this over the last month. Pretty much what I remember: The fuel gage is exterely unreliable. With 10.5 galllons going in, you probabbly had 2.5 left. Have you been using the AC? That drains gas. The 31 MPG City is an EPA estimate. And I think I've read that it does take a few miles before the Civics fuel efficency kicks in. But I think thats a genearl Honda thing, since it seems many of the older Hondas get great gas mileage, and its kicked in as they got older. My old '93 Accord would get 35+ MPG highway, which the EPA estimate was 28 for that year/model.

ya this was my first time keeping track of my miles cause lately it seemed bad... it came out to about 200 miles for the tank. i just filled up today and will be keeping an eye on it. and ya i know our fuel gauges suck. n no i dont floor it, i have an auto with 18s and only rev up to 3.5k rpms. i mean 275 would be fine but 200 is ridiculous even if i were to put the ac on.

notice this has NOTHING to do with the gauge... i reset the trip odometer when i filled up last time, and 250 miles later, the car has consumed 10+ gallons of gas...

I only have 6500 miles on my 2k2 EX 5-speed, but my last tank I got 34.5 city. My lowest was my first tank and that was 32. I leave every light at about 3000 to 3500 also. I also do not run the A/C and I am in TX.

i dont think nearly half as many people who claim 31+ actually get it. they are most likely reciting the EPA sticker value and assume thats what they get all the time.
Jman, I have no idea how you drive!
I have been keeping track of how many miles I get to the gallon since my second fill up til now. The only exceptions are all the times I have been to the body shop or dealership for problems... like when I'm not the only one who drives my car. I always average 28 to 30 miles.
Props to those who get more, but I mean, you must drive like Grammasssssssssssss.

I shift at 3k RPM. *Occassionally* I'll shift at 5k RPM when feeling in a slightly adventurous mood. But its always 30 MPG. If I gun it on the freeways, then maybe 28 MPG. Still 6k miles on the car, maybe that's why?

45 MPG? I highly doubt that.
When you fill up the tank, divide the number of miles you drove by the number of gallons it took to fill up the tank. Sounds obvious enough but it's amazing the number of people who divide that number by 13.2, instead of the amount of gas they used. If you're going to do it that way, yeah your gas mileage sucks. If you read the manual, it'll tell you the optimum shifting points for the best gas mileage. Roughly, that's shifting at 3,000 RPM. Do I drive like grandma? Uh, no. I have my spirited driving moments now and then, I've been known to let it roar to 7,500 RPM on occassion. I run my A/C all the time. I am in GA, if I don't run that I'll be sweating 2 lbs per gallon. Anyway, I get about 32 mpg. That's about 70% city and 30% highway.

I have kept track of my mpg since day 1 using an excel spreadsheet. I use the "b" tripometer and write the mileage on the gas receipt when I fill up. I have consistantly averaged over 33 mpg since the car was new. Sometimes as low as 31mpg and as high as 35mpg. That is the entire range. Sometimes I drive like a grandma (most of the time), ac is usually always on, and it's all city driving, mostly going back and forth to school.
Oh, those figures are with i/h/e and rota subs.

I wish there was a digital readout that tells you how many miles to empty. That would be much more efficient than guessing. I just refill when the light comes on
i drive like crazy, redline from almost every stop, drop it into lower gears all the time, yet i am making roughly 300 miles to 10.xx gallons. i'm happy with it i used to have horrible mileage, but then i decided to switch gas stations. i think that was it. i used to go to this crap gas station (speedway) cause it was down the street, but now i go to shell, it only takes about 10 minutes, but that's 10 minutes of fun with my car , but anyways, i noticed a big difference. i don't know what it was but speedway gas sucks, they must add something.
Try that

im gettin insanly high MPG on my tank right now. i filled up full and drove on the highway and used a lil less than 1/2 a tank. and the tripodometer read 229miles. i duno how, but hey, its cool. oh and i noticed that if you go 75mph you get the most out of your gas on the highway. if you go like 80mph or so, you just suck down so much gas.
LX Auto Sedan
I always get at least 300 miles on a tank, though my best was 400 once. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but try using the Fuel injector cleaner every few fill-ups. That keeps the fuel injectors flowing smoothly, thus giving you better gas mileage. And it also depends on how well you fill it up, too. If you stop when the pump clicks off, then you're not gonna get as much, considering you can usually add another dollar's worth of gas to the tank. I filled up 2 days ago, my gauge is 2 bars below the "F" and I've gone 140 miles. Heh heh, this is gonna be a really good tank, I can feel it.
Anyways, I would reccomend the injector cleaner, it works really well.

I was getting only about 32 mpg on the highway, until lately. I now have over 38,000 miles on my EX coupe and I am getting 38 mpg consistently and I drive it hard when im not on the highway. It just started getting really good gas mileage one day! I believe that 45 mpg is possible, especially if you dont drive like I do! Last night I filled up and it took 9 gallons and the odometer read 341 miles = 37.7 mpg!

I also keep track of mileage at every fill up. In my '02 EX Coupe 5spd, I've gotten 34.5 mpg consistently until my last tank. This is with 50/50 city/highway driving and teaching my wife how to drive a manual tranny.
I just filled up last night, even though gauge read half tank, because for some reason here in Ohio gas prices are the cheapest on Wednesday and sky rocket the closer you are to the weekend. So anyway... my trip odometer read 286 miles and it took 7.49 gallons to fill it up. That equals 38 mpg... (this tank was about 80% Highway driven at between 80 and 85 mph) My car has 1800 miles on it now. I don't drive like a grandma, but I don't try to tear my car up either. I've race a few cars... win some loose some.

I don't know what the final drive ratio is in the Toyota Corolla, but a friend of mine has a 2000 (1.8L) and he gets around 35-40 mpg every tank. (and he drives like a fiend!) When I hit 85mph my tach reads 4100rpm. When he is at 85mph his tach reads 3200rpm. I wonder why Honda and Toyota have such a difference in sizes of the 5th gear?
