CVT?? What exactly does this mean?

Maybe a dumb question, but in the helms manual it has different things for "CVT" What exactly is that?

Continually Variable Transmission.

It doesn't have gears, but belts that move to adjust the RPMs.

Continuously Variable Transmission. This smart belt driven system was actually invented by a Dutchman called van Doorne

only the HX and Hybrid come with the CVT as a replacement for a 4spd auto

EDIT: if you're in an unfamiliar car however, and are wondering if it's a CVT, this will always work.... first of all, it appears to be an automatic tranny. Shift it in to "D" and start driving. If you can feel the car shift from 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, then you're dealing with a 4spd automatic, the norm. If however it feels like it's revving up off the line*, and then you don't feel any shifts by the transmission, then it's a CVT. The CVT manipulates the belt positions to keeps RPM's in the ideal range for acceleration and deceleration, therefore not requiring shifting between 4 separate gears. A CVT has an infinate amount of "gears"

*It feels like this because it'll get the engine up in the ideal range for accelleration right away, rather than dragging through the 1k-3k range

i've heard that they banned those things in drag racing cause they are to efficent. no hesitation between gears because it has none.

i heard something like that too, where they aren't allowed to race much anymore.

Like was previously stated, only the HX has CVT. If you feel gears, a lag between shifting, u have a normal 4 speed auto, if not you have a CVT. Good luck

I would find it kind of aggrevating to drive a car without the:

Vroooommm..........Vroooommm.........Vroooommm.... .....Vroooommm...

The CVT just goes:

Vroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo mmm...

I have an HX CVT and I love it . Very smooth acceleration and it does great on hills, especially with the cruise control on. If you want more info on Honda's CVT or HX's, check out my group on Yahoo: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hondacivichxcvt (sorry for the shameless plug to my group). The links in the BOOKMARKS section will provide you to some very informative pages and you can post messages to people with CVT's are who are much more knowledgeable about them than I am. Also, there is a CVT group on Yahoo but I don't know the URL for it. Hope this helps!

yeah, the point of it is to think of it as a shiftless automatic....

now throw a gear shifter into the mix, to make that work, instead of having 5 or 6 separate positions to shift the gear, you'd have to have a lever that would just go forward and backwards without notchy positions, to provide an endless amount of gear positions. this is how the original automatic type of CVT works, it continuously varies the length of a belt(yes belt, no gears invlolved here), to keep the engine moving in a constant ideal speed. that's all only in theory of course, because as of now anyways, there's no such thing as a manual CVT. (sorry if I lost ya, its kind of a hard concept to explain)

The CVT out now(automatic type) has about the same performance as a 5spd, however, because it constantly remains in the ideal power range. (doesn't need go the whole way to the redline[actually lose power at the last hundred RPM anyways], and the RPMs never drop to a low non-ideal speed because as I said, there are no shifts) Constant power

I was actually considering an HX just for the CVT, and I don't remember what stopped me. I think I wanted a sunroof that it didn't come with, or it didn't come on the coupe, or something. Anyway, I just grabbed an EX.

trade in your EX and get a Civic Hybrid.... All the features of an EX Sedan plus some sweet @ss lookin features inside!(chrome accents, partially digital gauges, etc) Everyone thinks the CVT is a HX exclusive, but the Hybrids also come with either a 5spd or a CVT. All civics are slow anyways, why not get one that'll get 50+mpg (Remember folks, the fed government is even giving a $2000 tax refund for buying Hybrid cars right now! Tough deal to pass up IMHO )

here are some pics......

(check out the gauges)
(notice the gear shifter doesn't have D, 2, and 1.... it has D, S, and L)
(body kit, lightweight alloys, rear deck spoiler, and whip antenna)

i dont know about banning them from drag racing, but i do know that CVT's are really only used in smaller engines.. the audi CVT is only used in the 1.8L turbo and not in the auto tranny for the 2.8L turbo because the power band is too high

I own the HX, but I opted for the 5-speed over the CVT. I test drove the CVT and it was cool, but it just didn't feel right.

I kept thinking, "When is this damn thing gonna shift!" Hehehehe.

They're definately alot quicker than a regular automatic...and may even compete with a 5-speed. They also have no torque converter.

yeah i think the CVT should be offered on the EX since its so convienent and i guess it has better gas mileage but then again the HX comes with a vtec-e which saves more gas or something iono

CVT is also prone to failure if modded for more HP. Don't even consider nitrous or turbo with a CVT, unless you can figure out some way to beef it up.

yes, belts Here's an article I copied from a site w/ a pic of a CVT. I will bold the answer to your question
Gears (cogs) can only give a fixed set of ratios between input and output shafts. Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT's) rely on pulleys, wheels, and/or cones that can transmit drive at any radius thus offering infinitely variable "gear" ratios, within limits.

The motor scooter drive (right, c2001) shows a drive pulley, left, a driven pulley, right, and a belt between them. (The "teeth" on the belt are only to improve grip; there are no teeth on the pulleys.) The drive pulley is in fact made of two cones which can be moved closer together or further apart. Such movement varies the radius at which drive is taken off the drive pulley. The driven pulley is similarly constructed and the two operate in cooperation to keep the drive belt taut.

The motor scooter system only needs to handle low power and torque. A similar system was used on small DAF cars of the 1970s; two systems were used, one for the left rear wheel, one for the right rear wheel, thus obviating the need for a differential because they could deliver different ratios to the left and right of the car.

Belts are all very well for low power systems, although they do need to be changed regularly. Some more modern, higher powered, CVT's use steel belts which are more durable. Others use conical drive and driven members with a steel intermediate wheel (not toothed) which can move to take, and give, drive at different radii.

The advantage of CVT's is that they enable the engine to operate at exactly the optimum revs for given power demands. Early CVTs were limited in power handling ability; as of 2001 they developed enough to be offered with 2.5 litre V6's of up to 130kW, as in the 2001 Audi A4 - © L. A11ison, 4/2001
