100 dollar tint...too good to be true?
Ok, this story starts on Thursday and ends today, Monday. So Thursday morning I go to this tint place in Pasadena, CA for an estimate. Initially the guy wants $140 dollars for one car. So I ask him if I can get a better deal if I pay cash right now. He says OK to that and is willing to do it for $120. So then I ask if I do two cars could I get an even better deal. He says yes, and is now willing to do it for $100 dollars per car. So we shake on it and sign the papers (2 tints for $200). Now he asks how dark we want the windows. I tell him that I want a medium dark tint all the way around for the Accord and on my Civic, I want the darkest tint he's got and a medium tint in the front. He tells me that they're out of dark tint so I'd have to come back another day to get the Civic done with dark tint. I agree, pay $100 and get the Accord done that day. Now, Monday, I bring the Civic back to the tint place to get the tint job done. When I first arrive, they say lets complete the balance. So I pay him $100 cash. They then tinted the Civic with a dark tint in the rear and a medium tint in the front. So I come back to the tint place and they tell me that they want $40 more because dark tint costs more. I'm like WTF, we didn't agree on this?!? We agreed that I could get 2 cars tinted for $100 each, regardless of the darkness of the tint. He didn't say anything about darker tint costing more when we first agreed, and now that he's done it he wants more money for it. He says then I can't give you your keys back, and the he can remove the tint, but its gonna cost me $90 to do it. So I'm stuck now. The tint is already put on my car, if he's gonna remove it its gonna cost $90, and if i keep it its gonna cost $40 more. So what could I do, I gave him his freaking $40 extra. So unless you like to get deals changed on you at last minute I recommend not going where I went.

re-read your contract with him for the job. If it says nothing, call the police and tell them he has unlawfully held your car and changed a signed agreement without your consent. but make sure the wording in the contract doesn't allow him to do what he has done.
Don't you hate it when stupid people have time to think about what they have done?
he probably got to thinking that he made a bad deal on his end.
I would have said "40 bucks! Give me my car keys or I call the cops!"
I got my 5 windows done for $150. So in my book you still got a good deal.
I paid 100 bucks from a friend and just b/c we knew each other he did a shi$$$y job. so i recommend not getting it done from a friend unless you know each other a lot better than we did b/c it sucks!!!!!!

did that include any warranty? and did they do the rear window in one peice or two? cause the tint shop i went to charged 80 for the back 3 windows but the thing was the rear peice would be done in 2 peices. i think they charged an extra 40 to make it in one peice. that might be why its cheaper. also i dont think darker tint is more expensive, i think its just a way to rip someone off. and you should have stood your ground... when he asked for the extra $40, forget the cops you should have just raised hell. stay in the store ALL DAY long and start yelling everytime a customer comes in. main point is dont give up till you get the car back.

if any of you guys are from the san gabriel valley (california) and are looking for a good price tint job, check out CALIFORNIA TINT in ROSEMEAD. located on rosemead and mission. i have had a few buddies go there and had very good tint jobs for decent prices. i cant give no referrals but they always give great deals even without one. so check them out if you are shopping for tint. oh yeah. dont settle for cheap charcoal tint. pay the extra 10-20 bucks and get titanium. itll last longer and wont bubble up or turn purple. what they did to you spencerkam was not koo man. but word of mouth about bad business will bring them down. so just spread the word man.

Tell them if they don't give you your money back you're going to sue, but only after you stand infront of their place of business with a big sign saying they are crooks and talking to everyone who plans on stepping foot into the establishment and convinsing them not to. That ought to do the trick.
I only paid $92 for all five windows with the darkest LEGAL tint available (insurance reasons). I kind of lucked out, as I met the guy and he was new in town. I was his first customer, and he did one hell of a job.
i cant believe someone would say that , kick him in the nutz and take your damn car back but yea got to do it the legal way and sue his pants of and buy you a k20 engine

Yeah. I'd say you pretty much got screwed too. But, question for you - does Cali have a legal limit that you can tint to? I know that here in VA it's 50% in the back and 35% in the front. If Cali has a legal limit and you went darker than that, I don't think you're going to be able to do much about it because many shops won't warranty that kind of work. I'd double-check on it before you blow the whistle on this shop.

the ca tint law is...
as dark as you want in the back
nonthing other then factory on the driver/passenger side
and from my understanding, the shop thats doing the tint would get in trouble rather then the guy with the tint. not sure tho, maybe quicksilver could correct me.

A signed contract exists that that the price was $200 for two tint jobs on two separate cars. If there exists no stipulation that it is $40 extra for the darker tint, then he has to honor the origninal agreement. You really should have just called 911 instead of giving him an extra $40. I'm not sure if there's anything you can do now since by giving him the $40, you affirmed and agreed with his counter offer.

shouldnt you just call your local police station rather then 911 for this case? but then again those calls take forever for the police to come so maybe 911 is better
It really doesn't matter. If you call the precinct, they have to "type" (on the computer) to communications what you are requesting and they dispatch it. PDs have one dispatch location where the 911 calls are also usually handled. Someone refusing to give back your car keys is a 911 situation in my opinion.
