no. air cooled motorcycles need to keep moving while the engine is running or else they over heat. this is a major problem with older bikes, especially the harleys. its completly legal, and people who dont know are dicks about it, not letting them pass and what not. that pisses me off to no end.

i think people are misunderstanding here. i dont know what the author meant by saying "weaving" in and out of the traffic. What im talking about is that, when traffic on the freeway or where ever is stopped or going real slow, the bikes are allowed to go inbetween the lanes, between the cars. people get jealous or go agro for some other reason over this and its ghai.
I've heard here in Texas it's legal in that kind of situation for them to go into the breakdown lane or on the shoulder and pass everyone.
EDIT: I heard it's legal for them to go in-between cars like you described also. I asked at defensive driving a few months ago.

well, no illwill towards anyone, but it is illegal in most states and it is a safety issue...the middle of lanes are not a designated lane...just cause you have a bike doesnt mean the same rules dont apply!
emissions and noise standards are not the type of rules im talking about....i mean as far as "moving" stardards and rules.
i.e. driving down the center of lanes, driving on the shoulder, speeding, reckless driving, ect....
now lets say there is a traffic jam...and something happens where someone suddenly needs to get out of their car and a bike is coming down the center or two lanes and *BAM* nails that person.....that sounds like a safety issue to me
im not trying to **** anyone off here......im just trying to give my opinion

... i believe the person who is getting out of their car in the middle of the street or on the freeway is at fault. traffic or no.

joe, im not trying to start a fight with you....im just giving a scanario where driving down between lanes could be a safety issue
myself i believe it should be illegal, in some (or all) states it is, but if you have a different opinion its cool...
how do you know for sure that it isnt illegal in your state??????????????????

well i got curious so i did some checking....went to the california vehicle code website and found this....
21714. The driver of a vehicle described in subdivision (f) of
Section 27803 shall not do either of the following:
(a) Operate the vehicle in any lane established under Section
21655.5 as an exclusive or preferential use lane for high-occupancy
vehicles.
(b) Operate the vehicle in either of the following:
(1) The area on, or immediately adjacent to, the striping or other
markers designating adjacent traffic lanes.
(2) The area between two or more vehicles that are traveling in
adjacent traffic lanes.
its about 4/5 of the way down the page.....says it right in that last sentences.....

I'm pretty sure that I did see that lane splitting was legal in some states. I'm not sure that I would do it if I had a bike because you can bet that if someone is changing lanes and they hit you, they'd have a pretty good case about not being able to see you. Not to mention the fact that an accident on a bike is far worse than one in a car.

I ride my bike all the time and I dont do it just because its mad dangerous. Drivers dont see me when im riding. Do you think drivers are gonna see me when there not expecting to? Ive got plenty of bike nightmare stories. Plain FACT. Many people dont respect bikes.

Found this online for CA:
Here's the text (verbatim) from the CHP's site: "Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible under California law but must done in a safe and prudent manner. The motorcycle should be traveling no more than 10 mph faster than surrounding traffic (without exceeding the speed limit) and not come close enough to that traffic to cause a collision."
But apparently it's illegal in most other states...

How stupid, I completely disagree.......When I was in CALI last week (sanfran).....(I'm from washington).....I was just sitting in my lane, then traffic starts to move, i look in my mirrors and do a "blindspot check".......Just before I changed lanes.......whooooooooom, f *cker goes flying by.......
At like 45MPH, In a dead stop traffic......how stupid.......They were all over Frsico.......They almost tagged my ride so many times...........
I don't want to talk about it anymore.....

That's where "safe and prudent manner" comes into play...had there been a cop, he would've been tagged - I don't believe it should be legal - I've seen so many people change their minds on what lane they want to be in that if a motorcyclist was there, he would've been doing tumble rolls down the line...

That is now one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard. Yeah, its legal for them to weave in and out of cars because if they dont, there bikes will blow up. Thats what you you just made that sound like.
