convince me why I should get an EX instead of....

Okay... if money wasn't so much of an issue, the car I get this coming spring would most likely be a Celica GT... however it is I know the GT's aren't all that much quicker than an EX, but I DO understand that they are far superior when it comes to handling. I could pretty much afford a comparably equipped Celi GT, but an EX would def be way easier to pay for and insurance would be a bit lower, too.... What opinions do you guys have that'd help me decide I'm not looking to race either of the two, so it doesn't have to be all that fast, I just want a well balanced car for the $$$(something practical, yet fun when I wanna unleash it). Also, one more question although I'm sure it's been discussed before.. for all you EX owners, can you at all feel VTEC when it kicks in? I've heard that it's really weak in the SOHC. thanks

grr.... the Cavi is a sweet car except the fuqin thing keeps falling apart! I mean, it's a domestic w/120K, what was I thinking Here what I had to get fixed up since I owned it(4 months)

~new clutch
~pass side pwr window motor
~drivers side door pwr lock motor
~new catalytic converter
~oil change(although that's routine,hehe)

and just last night @ the east mall my damn drivers side window motor almost died! i just about turned around back home because there wasn't a chance in hell I was gonna leave my window down at the East mall Thankfully it finally worked, but man I'm tellin ya, it was such a mistake to buy this POS! it's great off the line, but not worth all the $$$ I'm putting into it, it's time for a NEW car, so I'm saving up a couple thousand to put down on whatever next spring, or maybe even right after christmas... we'll see

Originally I was going to get an LX too, but the dealer(family friend) told us that by really taking a look at the two an dthinking about it, your saving yourself some money. I think my payments worked out to be only like $20 more then an LX per month.

For one, I wanted something fully loaded. The EX has the CD player, sunroof, the VTEC, spoiler(well not all of them, but mine did), power everything, alarm, slightly larger/better looking wheels, etc etc. It just seemed to be the better decision cause I'd new that I'd end up wanting these things on an LX. To answer your other question, I can definately feel when ithe VTEC kicks in, just wish it wasnt way up the powerband when it does kick in.

Anyway, IMO I'd go with an EX if you want all of the bells and whistles, if you don't really care about any of that, then just get an LX.

I think you have bascially convinced yourself! You know your insurance will be lower with the Civic and you will get better gas mileage. On top of all that the car costs less than the Celica. Looking at all this from a finacial point of view... the Civic is the best choice and it will save you money in the long run

lol, i was originally looking at the DX thinking that's all I could afford, then I told dad to check prices with everything I wanted to add on to it(works for the dealer)... he said, "Joel, looks like you'd be wasting money on this, you might as well get the EX for about $30 more a month" haha.... yeah, I'm definately a bells&whistles type of person

The celica is superior. More potential for upgrades too. As long as you like the futuristic styling.
I think the civic looks way better though. You could prob get more options on the civic too. Like sunroof and bodykit.

Fuel economy is a non issue. These compacts use so little gas in stock form compared to mid size and bigger cars.

Think about it the EX has bigger wheels, sunroof, VTEC which gives a nice little kick and its not that much more. Im sure it has other stuff too.

The civic is more practical. I don't think the celica looks bad but it's a bit to racey looking if you ask me. Plus, I don't think the GT is any faster than a 5m ex vic. If you were looking at the gts than I would say get it. I don't think the gt is really worth it. Plus, they are pretty darn small.

If you want to autocross, the celica is hands down the better car. The celica GT was THE car to have in ES last year, and would still be compeditive in GS this year.

The civic is in HS with the chevettes and stuff.

I agree. Joel, the EX really dosnt have a noticiable VTEC changeover.

Go Test drive the Protege 5. It will outhandle both Civic EX and Celica GT. Stock for Stock.
Speed wise, it's in the same ball park with 130 HP and 135 lbs @ 4000 RPM.

Oh ya, and insurance is cheaper...

That blue one looks HOT. Too bad they cost as almost as much as an EL here in Canada, and don't come in blue sedan. My EL with Leather, AC, ABS, and a whole bunch of other 'goodies' was only $1500 more. Plus, the EL comes with the 127 HP VTEC.

The "blue one" is an MP3, special edition with stock handling only a few g's away from a porche. Best bang for your buck voted #1 by C&D and Motortrend. Only lacks HP a bit with 140HP. Stock comes with 17" racing harts and an awesome sound system w/ mp3 indash player. Yellow one is the P5. Both great cars and reliable and a nice package for what it costs. 100% built in japan. Plenty of aftermarket support as well as Turbo kits avaiilable for both.

Negative, gt is most certainly not way faster than ex. Chicks may dig the celica more if you are a high school kid or trying to pick up teeny boppers. Oh, and better looks if you are going for that "boy racer" look. I agree with the handling part.

Plus, buying the gt is like buying a v6 stang. What's the point?

The GT-S will have no problem spanking the EX through the 1/4 by atleast 3 car lengths with a good driver.

If he was looking at the GT-S it would be a whole different story. I would pick the GT-S over a civic ex coupe anyday.

CapYoda has a spectacular aura aboutCapYoda has a spectacular aura about
the celica gt is a different class of car compare to the Civic Ex...

its a sporty car, albiet the water down version... but its still better than a Civic EX, depends on the point of view though.

I'll take a Celica GT 5spd over my Civic EX 5spd. thats what I'll tell you.

BUT, thats extra blign bling, and insurance too.

I'd suggest looking at the Protege 5 like protege5 whatever (sorry can't remember your name dude!) suggested. THat car wasn't out when I was buying my EX, and if it was, I would have test drive it.

and I'm sure it can out handle the Civic, its got pretty decent handling for a wagon... and its definitely got some very good review. (as for out handling the gt, maybe..)

I duno about the MP3....

the Protege 5 is very near the price of a Civic EX...

and I suggest you checking out vehicles out too!

Yes and no IMHO. Fuel economy is a non-issue, but it's the other way around, mid-size and full size cars don't use that much more. Even the Ford Crown Vic gets 19 city 26 hwy vs our supposedly 30-31 city 38 hwy and that weighs about twice what the Civic weighs. Most mid size cars probably get around 20 mpg.

It's the Jeeps and the SUVs and those things that really t the gas. Some get like 9-11 mpg.

first of all, girls are not a deciding factor... I have a gf of almost 2 years so I'm not gonna be picking a new one up any time soon(and she'd actually rather have me get a Civic )

also, they may already be out, but if not, they're damn close... turbo, my friend, is the point of a GT... the kit I was looking at puts about 215 horsies to the wheels, which is around 250 @ the flywheel Like most people, I'd probably actually never turbocharge it, but it's nice knowing the option is there....

Plus, stock for stock, although the GTS has lift, the GT has a narrower bore and a longer stroke. Basically, this means that if the engines were to stay the same with the exception that the GTS didn't have the 2nd cam profile, the GT would be faster. All in all, the GT's power is more usable for a daily driver while a GTS is better for the strip.

Another option I could always go is to splurge and get a GTI 1.8T w/leather, monsoon stereo and sunroof... but I have no idea of how haggle-able the VW dealers are... i'm shooting to get whatever really close to invoice, so we'll see.... I just hope the economy still sucks when I'm ready to buy
