1.7 liter diesel turbo engine
In December 1999, Honda reached an agreement with General Motors Corporation (GM) to supply GM with Honda's V6 ULEV engine and transmission, and Isuzu, a GM Group company, to provide Honda with diesel engines for Honda vehicles bound for the European market. The contract this time to supply diesel engines is in accordance with that agreement and stipulates that Isuzu will provide approximately 5,000 engines to Honda through March of 2002 and another 15,000 engines annually commencing in April for Civics to be sold in the European market. Production of the Civic will be at Honda's U.K. subsidiary, Honda of the U.K. Manufacturing, Ltd. (HUM, located in Swindon, Wiltshire, England).
The engine that Isuzu will supply Honda with is a newly developed 1686cc DOHC diesel equipped with a common rail high-pressure fuel injection system. It is exclusively designed for the Civic and provides a maximum output of 100ps (value based on in-house testing), while still delivering excellent fuel economy.

VW makes a good turbo diesel for their Jetta and Golf. Lots of torque and good fuel economy. They use a 1.9L which makes 150 ft-lbs and sips fuel at somewhere in the range of 5L/100km.
A lot of cars in Europe run diesel, much more than North America. Mercedes-Benz used to make turbo diesels for their cars.

anyone from Europe wanna check this out for us? cuz the only main difference with a diesel engine is that it doesnt have spark plugs rite? so couldnt we just use the stock turbo from a european civic and modify to work with us?..
this is assuming they have the same D class block/engine orientation/ chassis ?? i dunno.. just a quick though

Diesel engines don't have spark, they will ignite the cylinder from high compression. The turbo part just makes it more efficiently compressed in the cylinder. I think the compression ratios are like 20:1.
No diesels are also used for many cars in Europe. In fact the majority of the cars over there are diesels. No these are not the smoky and slow ones of the past. They are clean, quiet, and capable of some good performance that rivals gas engines. It's too bad that we don't get any of the new Mercedes diesels over here, although there is a hint that some of them might be making their way over here.

Diesel engines in cars are very popular in Europe and are expected to catch on in the U.S. within the next several years. Modern diesel engines are clean, quiet, and get very good gas mileage without a significant reduction in performance. With gas prices rising, expect to see more manufacterers using diesel engines in the U.S.
