variable effort steering?

why is it that i can't tell much difference in 'effort' with the varible effort power steering system in our cars? it's supposed to provide more power assist at lower speed and less at higher speeds. i.m.o., i can't tell a difference at any speed. when i test drove the new si i could tell a huge differnce in power assist in the steering. (however in the new si it's a totally different steering assembly--fully electric.) so anyways, does anyone notice this with their civic? sorry about the long post.

I would guess that if you can't notice a difference, then it's working just fine!

That's what I was thinking. If the steering feels the same at 5 mph and 100 mph, then isn't that what variable assist is all about?
