I WILL CLEAR UP THINGS!!!!

Okay there have been a lot of post about a governer....WELL let me paste in a quote that one person had

Quote
[hr]I thought that we already established that (manual at least) Civics don't have a 'govenor' or anything like that. Top speed of the car is limited by power vs. wind/road/transmission resistance. Only high powered cars need to be electronically speed limited, not 100HP Civics.[hr]
Listen when I am going down the road at 116 and my rpms are at like 5000, then I hit 117 my car won't let me go any faster. I can stop on the gas all I want but it will not accelerate any more. It is freakin governer people. The comment below is the most retarded comment in the history of morons. It is probably limited in the ECU. Older cars the governers were mechanical. Thanks

I want to here what you think...

Well it must have something because I have hit 115 and it won't let me go any faster! Sounds like something is limiting the speed.:confused

my car stopped at 126 on the 110 freeway by the harbor here in california. Added the highway and stuff just so you know I didn't do this around traffic. Totally lonely highway by the harbor. Well I took it all the way to 126 and I couldn't go any faster but 126 doesn't sound like a nice rounded number to have a governer to kick in. I just figured it was because my car is stock and their is nothing else my engine can do to rev higher since I can't get anymore air in there for the fuel to mix with. With some mods I know it'll go faster than that but in the meantime, while I'm still stock, the computer will not give any more fuel b/c there is no more air coming into my engine. That's it, the engine can't do anymore, it's like you running. You can run as fast as you can but you can't go faster than that b/c you don't have the muscles to move any faster or the bigger stronger lungs to breathe any faster. That's the MAX you can push it. As far as you trying to argue that the governer is controlled by the rpms... no, my rpms were past 5000.

Well, limited speed due to factors greek to any governor is called "drag limited". That's when the power created by the car can no longer surpass the pressure and friction exerted on it by the air it's trying to cut through. I've hit 122 in my LX on the highway before. Once. I've never gotten it above 110 after. When a car is governed it will hit the limit and the engine will quit for a second and then resume. That doesn't happen with our cars.

our civics "DO" have govenors....check your damn manual people

i think in the lx/dx it kicks in at around 115 or so...Ex around 125...almost like the amount of hp the car has...

however since my exhaust was installed i have been up to that speed once and at 115 no cut off, 120 no cut off....im thinking that my ecu was messed up cause of the exhaust...i dunno

BUT THEY DO HAVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

same here i hit 130 last night and my rpms were about 6 grand.....i dont understand why you wouldnt keep picking up speed on a level ground accelerating at WOT. the only thing that should stop you is the rev limiter.

Yep, our cars have a fuel cut-off gov. All new cars do. I'm almost positive it depends on the rating of the tires that come as standard equipment.

The manual only talk about the rev limitor but nothing about a governer. Rev limiter cuts you off after after certain RPM's past the redline on every gear, governers shut down your engine after certain speed limit.

Gear 2 ..........1.87..........8.5..........58 mph (6800 rpm)
Gear 3 ..........1.24..........12.8..........87 mph (6800 rpm)

your stock spedometer isnt very accurate above 100 MPH. keep that in mind, when refering to an INDICATED speed and what your ACTUAL speed really is.

Thank you for backing me up.........Did you see below where it said 127 @6000 RPM well I still have 1200 more RPMS to climb where are they. All newer cars have a fuel cut of governer. My car has it and my dads blazer has it.

If you have a governor, your car will not just "stop accelerating."

And trust me on this, even weak little cars have governors....

My 118 hp (I believe actual 93 at the wheels) 1996 S-10 had a governor at 93. You FEEL a governor, you will understand it when you hit it because it feels like you just SCREWED SOMETHING UP BAD....

Your car jolts and bucks and you flip out and let go of the gas because you don't know what the heck you just did to your car...then you realize, oh, I just hit the governor where the gas shuts off...

Governors are not just something that won't allow you to accelerate anymore...

sooooo..... the original post on this was that someone wanted to remove it or whatever. what would be the point of fuggin around with the ECU unless your regular commute requires you to drive 125+ mph for extended amounts of time. I cant see how the trouble of removing or changing the governor would equal the outcome. The rev limiter, on the other hand, is a different story.

He's talking about his S-10, not his Civic. I know I never hit a governor in my car even tho I got it above 120. And I know what a governor feels like. I hit it in a Sebring I rented once, at 110 exactly. The fuel shuts off and you feel the car suddenly loose power. That doesn't happen in the vic.

Oh, and when he was talking about the car getting to 127@6000RPM the reason it doesn't go above it is because the car is DRAG LIMITED. The tranny can no longer distribute enough power to the wheels at that gear ratio to overcome the drag and friction produced by the air it is cutting through. That is why you can't get more than 6000 RPMs in 5th gear, unless your going down hill or have a tailwind.

2001CIVICLX is correct. When you hit the governor you freakin' know it!!! It doesn't just not accelerate anymore, it's a fuel shutoff that feels pretty violent.

I hit the governor at 120mph many times in my '99 Civc DX and I know what it feels like. I have had my 2K2 EX up to 130mph downhill and have not yet hit the governor.

I'm not arguing whether or not our cars have a governor or not since I haven't researched it at all. All I'm saying is that I've been to 130mph and have yet to hit a governor.

Hey Air force, Army here. If our car had a "fuel cut off governer of some sort" then why would someone keep a constant speed, when the "what you call governer" or I call "max power" is reached? Wouldn't a fuel cutoof slow us back down? Hasn't happened to me, has it happened to you or anyone else? Don't remember anyone saying that...

Here is my story. I was racing a civic dx hatchback. We were on the highway going like 100, then he decides to pick it up a bit so I down shift to 4th to go around as I was getting ready to pass him (this was on a down slope) i was even then at about 117 it slowed me down. I push on the petal and it wouldn't go faster. This is my point it is a fuel cutoff governer of a sort. All I am saying is that, the crap about the wind road transmission friction crap is nothing but crap. Our 5th gear in a manual can get to 7000rpm it would just take like forever. We have a governer on our car. It is a simple as that

actually airforce, did you feel it? usually a fuel cut off is pretty noticeable, since the car definitely jolts... if it didn't jolt or anything, and you're just staying at a certain speed for a very long time.. then those other factors are there...

all trims probably have a fuel cut off at a certain point... but I've gone to 127 ish in my ex 5spd and I have yet to reach the fuel cut off...

so, what you should ask is, has anyone experience a fuel cut off? then we can determine if we have a speed governor at all...

and its quite noticeable when fuel cuts off, engine chokes, and you'll decelerate...

if you're just crusing at a speed with the rpm slowly climbing or staying put.. and your engine isn't choking and you're not feeling any jolt, you've probably reach the max speed...

besides, lets not drive too fast on these stock rubbers guys... although the ex's H rated tires, I still wouldn't recommend anything above 110... (although I do speed sometimes myself... sigh.)
