Raced an Impreza 2.5 RS

I went to Victor's house to give him some extra $ for my new CAI and later one of his friends I previously met up with came over and he had a silver Scooby. We checked it out and stuff... inside and out and he wanted to race and he had a choice between 3 7th gens... mine, Victor's and Ryans. Vic's and Ryans are both purely show cars now with 17s, as I'm still sporting the stock rims with Yokohama Avid rubber. So I was the clear choice for competition. Victor wanted to video tape it but he decided not to.

We lined up at some discreet place and Ryan was our flag girl. (j/k Ryan...)

Here's the stats:

Impreza 2.5 RS sedan
HP: 165 @ 5600 RPMs
Torque: 166 @ 4000 RPMs
Mods: None
Transmission: Automatic

Civic Coupe EX
Mods: Throttle cable, Skunk2 exhaust
Transmission: 5-speed

I had the start on him. By the end of 1st gear, I was ahead of him by my car's nose, and by the end of the race, I was a full car length ahead of him.

I'm pretty sick of racing autos...

That car might be factory-rated at 165HP but it really only puts down about 98-105 WHP!! Their exhaust is very restrictive and there is a big bottleneck at the downpipe-to-midpipe junction. That and it was an automatic. Bet he thought he was gonna beat you tho...guess you showed him!

Modified, yes, they can be fast but stock, NO. I have a friend with a 2001 2.5 RS 5-Spd and he has underdrive pulleys, intake, cat-back exhaust, and unichip, dyno'd at 168WHP. I would beat him bad with my old Jetta GLX VR6. Now that I have my rice-mobile, he beats on me all the time. Guess payback's a biatch!

BTW, I got the stock WHP numbers from when we dyno'd his car before any mods.

trust me i kno what you mean, i dont kno what he really had but it definitly
wasnt stock, when he dumped it in 1st gear it looked like it was going to stall out,
it just had this big jump but then he had nothin 1st and 2nd gear,
we were also racing a new Volks GTI which just breezed right past both of us
by 2 car lengths!

Yeah...sounds familiar...my friend and I ran into this "bog" problem when we first started working on his: After putting in the intake and exhaust, it would kinda surge ahead in first but then felt like it was stalling or running out of air and then would only improve a bit in second. In third it would start to pull, but by then any race would be over. Turns out his stock MAF was freaking out with the extra air coming in through the intake, since the stock airbox is a cursed, restrictive maze of tubes. We fixed that somewhat with an aftermarket MAF but what really got rid of the problem was the addition of the downpipe and the chip. He's currently working on acquiring a Garrett or turbo and getting the intake manifold ported and polished...that little scooby's gonna be a giant-killa when he's done!

Edit: Just remembered that we also had to replace his clutch with a stronger one...turns out this is another weak link...LOL...if that little car wasn't such a blast to drive, it would not be worth the pain!

As much as I hate Scooby's look, this is exactly why I appreciate it under it's skin.

But at least I can say I own3d one.

Scrappy needs to return though.

yeah, a catback exhaust will do amazing things for a 2.5RS. A friend of mine has a 2.5RS w/ a scoobysport catback exhaust and it flies... it's also a manual. A modded 2.5 would have whooped up on ya.

Not really...it's just that the stock scooby is choked by its incredibly restrictive intake and exhaust plumbing.
