Question about unlikely cop cars??
Being this question concerns NY, I'm sure QCKSLVR can answer best, but if anyone knows, please let me know - I'm curious.
I was on the Belt Parkway Friday night. As I was driving, I saw a car pulled over on the other side of the road. The "cop" car that had this guy pulled over had a red light on the dashboard, and the usual flashing lights in the rear window. Here's the thing.... the "cop" car was actually a Yellow NYC Taxi Cab!! I know that unmarked cars have been discussed on the forum before, but what about this cop car disguised as a taxi? Not that I would try to outrun it or anything, but now do I have to worry every time I see a yellow cab in my rear-view window?
Just curious.... thanks!

It must have been for something more serious than a traffic violation. The Taxi squad of the NYPD does operate undercover taxis which are actually police cars, but they don't really enforce the VTL. They mostly look for street crimes, but I suppose if the situation warranted it, they would make the stop. I was under the impression that any New York City taxi whose registration begins with 6F is police, however, I had also heard that the public caught onto this and they use a variety of registrations now.
The city has just about everything as far as cars.

Last year I got pulled over by an unmarked Champagne coloured Accord. He had lazer mounted to the dash and lights out the wazoo. He got me for a good one too, 111 in a 55. He wound up writing it for 91 in a 55 and therefore I didn't get arrested. It was like 450 bucks for it. I try and do the speed limit now.

i saw a worlds most scariest and shocking police videos that involves wild animals attacking number 87 on fx or somethin and they had like a black trans am for an undercover car, and it was ripping it up
i get freaked out by any crown vic, and anything that looks like a cop car for a split second, like black cars with roof racks

Again, the abuse of power argument really doesn't hold any water here.

The county down here just bought Sherifs dept. a bunch of Toyota hybrids, painted them all up, lights an all... I think they mostly use them for non-traffic business but the thought of them as pursuit vehicles is kinda funny...kinda like clown cops in a circus.
As far as abuse of power... that's when you see the police around town running 10-15 MPH over the speed limits when they are obviously just cruising to dinner or donuts, turning without using any directionals, hitting their lights to run traffic signals and turning them off as soon as they are through them... we see it daily in SE Florida.
But of course we are the terrorist flight training capitol of the USA and I don't wanna get into that whole voting ballot dimple thing...

Quicksilver, I am wondering if you have any trouble pulling people over in your car. I mean we all know a civic is a pretty slow car. I wonder if people you try to pull over will try and get away if their car is quicker.
I'm not using my car for enforcement purposes during my off days. I do emergency equipment installs and use my car to demonstrate various items to prospective clients so they can see how various lights and sirens work, etc. In comparison to the Crown Vic I drive, it is very slow, but the two or three times in the past few years I've used my lights to stop a car, the people stopped right away.

But seriously, what kind of circumstances would you do this in?
