my fam bought a gtp in 97, it has been a great car.
The L67 is just amazing, very few motors have the horsepower expandability that that motor poseses. The fuel injectors are ENORMOUS, even the guys running low 12's dont have to touch them. And the only reason GM LIMITS the motor to 280hp is because the thing can rip the steering wheel out of the hands of an 80 year old as it is....
It's to bad they dont stick that beast in a RWD car and let it rip with the 320hp it should be rated at.

yeah, yeah, expandability schmexpandability. hey GM! if you don't want RWD (like the car should have), ever consider AWD for that 280 HP beast? oh.. wait... that would be "too expensive" and would put FWD union workers out of work, right...
funny how BMW and audi and AMG can equip cars with engines that can rip the wheel out of an 80-year-old's hands. but the deal there is that 80-year-olds don't drive M5s, RS4s, or S55s... only pontiac markets its cars to performance drivers and geezers alike! kinda kills the image thing for me... if BMW started advertising the M5 with "a new trunk designed to fit your aluminum walker!", i'd forget i ever loved that car.
the point is performance comes from a lot of design, engineering, and research all in the name of performance. the dummies at GM think it's OK to strap 280 horses on a FWD family car to appeal to performance drivers. ha! PONTIAC, I FART IN YOUR GENERAL DIRECTION.

by ripping the wheel out of 80 year olds hands i am refering to torque steer, the car can LITTERALLY rip the wheel from your hands because of the high torque/FWD combo.

i saw this show whwere they show an exclusive look inside gm headquarters. they store over thousands of concepts. and they keep them... u might not know this. but they have cars made in the 80s that looks more better than current car today. they're just waiting for the right time. i think it was on a&e...

oh my god... more brilliant replies to my post...
STALLION: hmm... where exactly did i mention "sedan"? that's funny, cuz i in fact HAVE A CIVIC SEDAN. i didn't say i hated the grand prix because its a sedan -- i said it's a family car with too much power. there is no doubt in my mind it's gonna handle like the typical american-car land yacht compared to REAL performance cars. of course it's a win-win for GM -- they get tons of money by doing nothing more than sticking a high-output engine in a car that sells well because it's cheap. the pontiac grand prix is a rental car fleet queen -- EVERY agency rents those. i could care less if it had 280 HP, the 10,000 families going to disneyworld still have essentially the same car.
REDFOG: ever heard of the honda (acura) NSX? or perhaps the S2000? i dunno where you've been the last 10 years, but those are RWD buddy... or maybe the X-series 7th-gen civics in Japan with AWD? or the accord VTS? wow, honda DOES make AWD! (not to mention the CRV, pilot, MDX,...)
and SPIDER, dear lord... real classy reply for being a moderator and all... and guess what? i'm entitled to my opinion! if stallion likes the grand prix, more power to him. i don't. i guess you have a problem with that?!

grifter: no, because i'll be driving my family in an M5 or an S4 which has handling and a transmission worthy of the engine's power

Stop bashing bhayes. I could bash the civic fr thousands of reasons, to each their own. Domestic bashers are the true ricers. If you can't respect a company for putting out a car, with as much power and potetial as the gm 3800, you have problems.
I like the L67 engine, but its not as good as the 3800 that was in the Buick GN, that thing could go up to 25 lbs of boost i believe, and not have problems. Those were turbo engines. One thing I like about GM, is they dont misslabel their engines, you know like ford, calling a 4.9 liter 302 a 5.0
Anyways, back to bhayes, when I get my Trans Am done, with less than $10,000 put into it, i'll smoke both those cars, plus i'll have a nice little leather interior like both

not that any of you care, but Pontiac is actually mass producing this car, available in 2003... They're bringing back the GTO... looks like your normal Grand Prix Coupe, but with a 5.7L LS1 under the hood, RWD, and it puts down over 300 horsies! Best of all, mom's leasing one when her Trailblazer lease is up in 2yrs!
All you haters, go ahead and hate, but a 5.7 is a 5.7

yeah, I knew the idea at least came from Holden, but just outa curiosity, where'd you hear 350hp from? And i know this is capable of carrying that tax, but so are most SUV's, Rustang Gt's, Vette's, Firebirds etc... I've never heard of that tax, though... what state? or is it a federal tax?
On autoweek or caranddriver or motortrend or yahoo automotive news....or somewhere
I regularly read the daily automotive news, I'm a wee bit obsessed.
The article said something like "LUTZ says the car has to have integrity as a muscle car in order to work, and that means 350 horsepower, and gas guzzler tax"
Gas Guzzler tax applies to CARS (this is bs in my opinion, trucks should have to pay too) that get a combined epa city/highway rating of less than 20 MPG. So for instance the new mercury maurader which gets 17/23 (avg=20) does not get hit with gas guzzler tax. But a car that got 16/23 avg=19.X WOULD get hit with the federal tax. The last GM car that had to pay the tax was the cadillac allante.
oh i found it....
you might have to sign up to read it (it's free to do so)
Gs Gzlr
they say a combined rating of less than 22.5 mpg is gas guzzler territory which would mean the Marauder IS subject to the tax (but i'm not sure thats accurate, i really thought it was 20mpg)
