$300 CRX Slips Through My Fingers

Dateline Tuesday 6/11/02

I'm running a fever hotter than a four-balled tomcat, so I leave work 2 hours early to go home and LIE DOWN! I'm driving though town and there sits a red 1990 Honda CRX with "$299" written on the windshield. Just to make sure I'm not hallucinating and it didn't say "$299 Down..." I turn around and pull into the lot.

The body was rusted over the rear wheels and behind the front wheels. The rear glass on the driver's side was missing; the interior was pretty much wrecked; the odometer was showing 207,000 miles. But hey! It's $299! The guy came outside and started the thing and it ran smooth! By now I'm feeling like I'm gonna throw up, but I get on the cell phone to my son (thinking this would make the perfect race car--strip it and swap it). He gets all exited 'cause he's been saving money to put nitrous on his little hybrid Civic (see Member's Rides page 1) so he's got the cash in his pocket.

He lives with his mother, about 45 minutes from me, so he immediately hits the road. I can't stand it anymore, so I go on home and crash. About an hour later, sonny comes in saying he got there just in time to see someone else driving off in it! I just went ahead and

If I had only thought to put down a deposit! This is like some kind of weird urban legend.

My friend got his 1972 Ford LTD convertible for 2,500 on the side of the road. It runs perfect with its 400 cubic inch engine (for refrence our engine is around 100 cubic inches) and still has original shiny red paint and sparkling chrome. $2,500. Now that's a deal.

$300 for an old CRX isn't too rare, your best bet is to go to a poorer section of town and go used car shopping. I was thinking about getting a beater car like a CRX to mess around with, and you can find a good running one for $500 or less without looking too hard. Those cars are awesome speed platforms, you can drop a heck of an engine into the light frame.
