Safety officials have opened two new investigations into the Ford Focus, this time amid complaints the engine can suddenly stall and the front suspension can collapse.

The government has begun six investigations into the popular subcompact this year. Tim Hurd, a spokesman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said Thursday he cannot recall the government's ever having as many investigations into one vehicle at the same time.

Seventy-two people told NHTSA that the Focus stalled while they were driving, including seven who crashed. Seven people reported the front suspension control arm fractured while they were driving, leading to six crashes.

The investigation into engine stall involves 574,700 cars from the 2000 and 2001 model years, the first two years of production. The suspension investigation also includes the 2002 model year.

The Focus is the country's fifth-best-selling car, trailing only the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Taurus and Honda Civic. But it has been plagued with safety problems, already having been recalled eight times for problems ranging from faulty seat latches and windshield wipers to a throttle that can stick open.

Two of NHTSA's other open investigations involve possible air bag malfunctions, while the remaining were prompted by reports the rear wheel bearings could fail and the engine could catch fire.

haha nice....i was also happy to read in the new consumer reports that focus couldnt qualify for one of the best compacts cuz of poor reliablity...btw civic won that category
also..you know that sunfire commercial that makes fun of civics....u should read what they had to say about that car....sooo many bad things...bad interior, poor gas mileage..alot more i cant think of...i thought it was funny though...a car thats supposed to be "teaching civics a lesson"

In truth: Those cars don't last a year. If you know someone who's had one for more than a year with no major problems then they are lucky... until next year.

Yeah I read that last night, and was sooo happy.
So now no one can say the Focus is better. I have seen some nice looking hooked up ones but I guess they are just for show now.
And well the Sunfire, I am not even going to go there.

I was at a friends house last night and she had some guy over that owned a 2002 focus with some mods. she asked me if I liked his car, I yelled out a hell fvucking NO to that question. I told her that it was a very unreliable car and they are fugly no matter what you do to them.

Whew, good thing I didnt get one.... Money was an issue... My dream car was a Sentra se-R, but my money said Ford Focus, and it turned out to be a 2002 Black 4dr Honda Civic
