1990 CRX...Is this a good price???
Ran into a 1990 CRX for $4270 today. VERY clean, no rust perfect interior. Is that a good price. What type of engine does this car have stock? Can any of you Honda gurus help me out? What will it take to make it go fast (as in the 13's)? Need advice. Thanks.

That does NOT sound like a good price, It had better have been swapped out already........
don't know that much about latter years of Honda.......I think you stick a b series in it....b16 or 18....
something like that.....

Edmunds.com used vehicle price for 1990 CRX
familyman,
It should be a piece of cake to get a 90 CRX into the 13's. HAsport makes some quality engine mounts to swap a B-series engine in there. For N/A, a B18C5 Type R swap will run you around $6000 including labor. Or just get a B18C1 and turbo that puppy. With enough boost, you will be running in the mid to high 12's.

familyman:
Who are you buying the car from? If it's some Joe Schmoe student or Sally Homemaker who isn't into high performance cars, you can usually talk them down ("That car is 12 years old, c'mon!"). If the guy probably knows the super performance potential of the '88-'91 CRX, he probably won't sell it for less than $3k or so.

familyman, i researched doing a whole crx project and was looking for a 1990. however after my first show with my 2k1 i decided to keep workin on mine . anyway, a good condition stock 1990 crx should run only about 1800-2000 at the most. the b16a1 engine and tranny with lsd will cost you less than 2500 bucks and its a real easy swap. turbos around 2500-3000, then the bolt ons are aobut 10 or 20 dollars cheaper then average. u can make it VERY fast with a small amount of money. PM me if you want since I have tons of info on everyhting i was gonna do for mine if i had gotten it.
the crx si motor is some variant of the d16.
$3270, in US dollars!? you're joking, right? that's a nice CRX and all, but for that kind of money you could get a very nice 5th gen hatch, which actually has some curves in its body. you can get a barely running CRX down here for about $500. a good one doesn't go much more than $2000, unless it's heavily modded!

With that kind of mileage, I would go up to like 2500k. It is 12 yrs old but a very fine specimen. I bet it is still reliable. Any reliable car in that kind of shape would command around 2k. $3270 is not that far off from 2500 though. However, if you are going to make a dragster type car out it, you may be better off finding one that isn't running. If you are going to make a grocery getter that tears up the track on the weekends, I think you found a great vehicle to modify.

Well if you're planning to hit 12's via a turbocharged B18C1 (GSR motor), in addition to the usual suspects (lightweight wheels, drag slicks, exhaust, brakes, rollcage / safety equipment) here is a summary of what you'll need:
B18C1 motor: Depending on how much mileage the longblock has and whom you buy it from, this will cost anywhere from $3000 to $4000. The price is high because demand is pretty high (B18C1 blocks are the de facto choice for almost all turbo apps). One trustworthy shop that I've heard nothing but GLOWING reviews about is Import Auto Salvage. They may not have the lowest prices, but their motors are always: 1) legit, 2) complete (includes all axles, wiring, ECU, and no missing components). They have great customer service and Larry Jr. will take care of you if something is not to your satisfaction (e.g. a throttle cable breaks while the motor is in transit). There are some other good shops out there, but I don't think I've heard a single bad thing about IAS.
B18C1 shortblock internals: Running enough boost to hit 12's means you better have a built bottom end. A set of forged pistons from JE, Arias, or Wiseco will probably run around $200. A matching set of Crower or Eagle rods is a must too, but I'm not sure of the prices on these (should be less than a set of pistons). It would also be wise to resleeve the block (Golden Eagle will do this for a pretty penny).
And of course, a quality turbo system from Drag or Revhard will be around $3k. But all of this work will be for nought unless you have good tuning. A Hondata system will run around $200 and dyno tuning with a shop will run around $100/hr or so.
There might be a few details I left out, but to get a general idea it could cost up to $10k or $11k (in addition to the cost of the car) when all is said and done. It's also worth mentioning that a few shops such as ImportBuilders produce crate motor packages for your specific application. These motors are fully built with forged pistons, strong rods, fully sleeved blocks, port and polished, the works. The cost of these packages may very well be cheaper than buying everything separately and having a shop put everything together. I think the packages ImportBuilders advertises are CRVTEC combos (B16A head with 2.0L CRV blocks), but they could just as easily produce a built B18C1 for you. When I was visiting their shop a month ago, one of their EG Civics was running about 20 lbs. of boost on a fully built B18C1 (that car ran 12's I believe). If you need to contact IB, just e-mail Jeff Schaefer at sales@importbuilders.com.
Well as you can see there is a lot of work involved in making a 12 sec car. But it can definitely be done, and a lightweight 4th gen Civic CRX is one of the best and most popular ways to do it.

Well, now that reality has set in: one project at a time. I will get my 2K1 done first. Then in a couple of years it looks like I need to find a trashed CRX as I will be scrapping the interior and the motor and basically coming from the group up. Sorry about getting all worked up, looks like I have plenty left to do on my 2K1. Thanks for the detailed info, that why I love this site. Thanks again.
NOthing against the dx but if you are planing on doing a swap go for the si and even for the si u shouldn't pay more than 3 but hey if u want one that bad its your thing i however am waiting till i find just the right one

if that things at a used car dealership, garantee it was wrecked and rebuilt at least twice. Its way to clean. By the way i payed 850 bucks for my 1989 Civic Base with the same motor 1.5 litre (i think thats what dx has) and mine had 139,000 on it.
heres a 1989 si for 4000 grand to give you an example of what you can get for that much !989 CRX SI with mods

>>that is a 1990 civic dx...came with the d15b2 that made 90hp and ~90lb ft tq...it also has a 5spd tranny and dpfi (wiring is different than regular honda wiring)...$3,270 is too much even from a dealer for that car with that many miles...i'd offer $2,500 tops for that car (it looks in good shape)...a little about crxs...hf is the lightest, dx next, then si
the 88-91 crx si and civic si came with the d16a6 (108hp, 92 lb ft tq)...only 90-91 came with rear disc brakes
i own an 88 crx hf (d15b6 = 62 hp, 90 lb ft tq) that is being converted to an si (rear wheel discs, si engine, si front knuckles, 11" gsr front brakes) and modified for racing next year in the east coast honda challenge ([L]www.honda-challenge.com[/L])
a much better site for crx help is [L]www.honda-tech.com[/L] (only since this is a 7g civic board)
