Some1 Wanna explain this???
K...well I have a slush box unfortuanatly, and I hear all the talk about hwo much faster manuals are compared to automatics...but I've heard some junk about a shift kit...WTF is that? does it help us? is there one out for our car? whatever it is...the peeps with autos in my school are always like....well ya I got a shift kit put in so...It doesn't matter that its not a manual....some1 explain please...I'm going mad.

maybe a sport shifter?? is what there talkin about....its like a shifter you can go from D2 to D3 or whatever without using a clutch or something like that...im not sure, just know the RSX have them.
still think its pretty weird....its like a wanna be manual but dont know how to use the clutch
im not flaming or anything just think its weird
i guess??

ya, maybe....I wasn't real sure on what it is either....I thought it might be somethign that like made it shift faster...like you would if you were racing in a manual...or maybe not faster....but move the shift point closer the the redline...ok...its midnight and I'm rambling and I don
t know if I've made any sense whatsoever so....

my ex girlfriend bought an 02 civic ex standard two days ago, no mods.
ive got 01 ex auto, injen cai and octane front which GREATLY affects the amount of air getn sucked in
tonight we raced.....first from a stop, she had me off the line(gave her a headstart ,1\2 car link)i got out in front pretty quick and every time i checked my rearview she was further away
second race on interstate, 50 mph lined up and punched it. c ya i blew her away. i thought she would win with a standard ya know. it makes me feel better to see im actually get good gains from my intake\front bumber combo even though ive got an auto

A shift kit is something that goes in your tranny to firm up your shifts. Most people buy them so they can squeal their tires going into 2nd easier. Its not the best thing to do especially on a newer transmission.
Okay, just to clarify things about automatics and manual transmission comparisons--manual transmissions are superior in performance. 99.99999% of the automatic transmissions made have a tendency to shift at really bad times and even seem to lag or get confused when you "hotrod" around. I've read article after article in various tuner magazines like Turbo Magazine, Sports Compact Car Magazine, and Import Racer! Magazine about new and upcoming transmission types and the classic discussion about auto vs. manual--all came to the conclusion that manual is best for getting the most power out of a car.
Also, it takes a varying amount of practice to squeeze every ounce of power out of a 4-cylinder via a 5-speed. I drove a V8-powered muscle car before I purchased my Civic and I must tell you, there is a significant difference in "style." What I mean by that is, the Charger (muscle car) had a monsterous amount of horsepower and torque and weighed a lot more than any Civic; thus, I drove it like a tank powered by jet propulsion. The Charger was somewhat clumsy when you were heavy-footed, so if you wanted a good take-off, you had to go easy on initial launch and after you had some momentum you could lay into the throttle. The Civic, for a good take-off, requires you to rev the engine to about 4,500 RPM's (almost to it's peak torque) and pop the clutch. If you have good tires, you shouldn't slip the wheels too much and you should ride 1st gear hard until about 6,500 RPM's, at which point you can quickly drop to 2nd gear and pray you don't have to let off the gas because the 2nd gear in our cars is kinda weak. You should be well on your way to 60 mph and know you shifted at the sweet spot if you heard your tires chirp when you shifted from 1st to 2nd.
If you still refuse to admit to yourself that manual transmissions are superior to automatics, ask yourself this; how many Porsches, Ferrari's, and Lamborgini's have an available automatic transmission option?

I have an auto in mine, and alot of the times I wish it was a manual cause I like going through the gears. But the main reason I got the auto was so my wife could drive as well (she doesnt know how to drive a stick). So now that I have it I, i wished I had just said to hell with it and get the manual but my auto still has a good run, and I have noticed alot more response from it since I put the exhaust and intake on.
This is just my $0.02

Straight Roads.
Racing in Auto = Flooring the pedal. Skill level required ( * )
Racing in Manual = Knowing how to shift....well. ( ***** )
Track
Racing in Auto = Brake, turn, Accelerate, Brake, turn, Accelerate.
Racing in Manual = revmatch, downshift, turn accelerate, upshift ( could throw a few double clutches in there too)

A properly done shift kit in an automatic will result in much faster shifts. I had my valve body drilled out (previous car) and a chip made to match the mods. The result was nearly instantaneous 1-2 & 2-3 shifts. 3-4 shifts were about 2x faster than stock. The relatively cheap mod ($350) dropped a whole second off my 0-60mph. The best part was I could chirp the tires engaging 2nd & 3rd.
BTW, I have a manual in my Civic.
EDIT: While I modified my valvebody, apparently it's alot harder on imports. Level 10 offers to modify it for you.

I was just about to mention level 10. they sell a shiftronic transmission, which basically lets you control when and to what gear the transmission shifts by the puch of a buton. this would actually cut down on the time it takes to shift versus a standard. it looks like they've improved upon it. They used to have one listed for around 500, but this one looks like it does alot more. best part is that its plug-and-play.
Another option is a complete torque conversion, which level 10 will also perform for about 1000. This will adjust when your tranny shifts to the optimum time reducing any human error in shifting. This will illegidly blow any manual away.

yeah i know the biotch cant drive a standard, im just trying to encourage 2k1civex to keep tunning even though he has an auto, cause it does feel good to be able to modify your ride and beat cars u couldnt before
This "shiftronic" thing sounds good, but I'm really curious how well it works. Some products are marketed as latest-and-greatest technology, but aren't actually worth a crap (i.e. Tornado intake). How many of you have actually used this shiftronic system and have run tests with it on the 1/4 and around a track and then ran the same tests using the same vehicle without the shiftronic system? It sounds kosher, but then again, why isn't it used in high-dollar sports cars? I've seen push-button shift systems in Ferrari's and, frankly, didn't think they were worth a d*mn. Maybe it really just depends on the person--if you are not very skilled with a manual, a shiftronic system may better serve you.

its this easy (and this doesnt count automatic equiped cars like ferrari, M5s, 911s and what have you...).
Automatic tranny sucks more power then amanual so you put less to the ground.
You generally cant launch in the correct power band with the correct modulation with an automatic.
unless you have a VERY nice automatic specifically designed for performance driving its NOT going to shift at the optimum points.
the end.
