Car Towing & Crooked Cop
So I wake up hearing a big diesel engine (tow truck) out my window. I look outside and my buddy is talking with a cop cause his car is being towed. He got screwed with that odd-even parking thing here in upstate NY. So anyway the cop says that's gonna be $115 to get it out of impound or that he could give $50 cash on the spot and the cop will forget all about it. Now my buddy is thinking is this for real or is this cop trying to get him in more trouble for bribary?? No way, so today he gets his car out of impound. What he thought would only be $115 turned out to be a lot more. The cop ended up giving him a ticket for odd even parking $55, but then another ticket for something else another $55 about how something on his Jeep didn't meet state requirements. What kind of crap was this about? A college student not even doing anything wrong, except forgetting to move his car is now out over $200. It stinks since I live with the guy and he's off yelling about it, but can't do anything because it's his word against the cops.
What a crooked cop. He could be charged with official misconduct; a crime. Cops like that make all of us look bad. Unless it's on tape, I wouldn't open a can of worms with accusing a police officer of fishing for a bribe. He could try going to the district attorney, which is independent of the police department and will definately investigate; but he must be prepared to prove his case and sign a statement.

they have this thing up here in NY state around my college that on an odd day you need to park on the odd side of the street, even day must park on even side. (if the house number is 53, then you can park on that side of the street the 1,3,5,7,etc. days of the month) this is so dumb but the town gets a butt load of $ from us cause of tickets.
I work a post once a week where they have alternate side of the street parking similar to what you described. I refuse to issue summonses for that--I have a BBA in Management and Accounting and went through perhaps the longest police academy in the United States and can not understand the parking conditions myself, so I refuse to enforce it.
