Buying a car online vs at a dealership

I am debating looking into purchasing a car online. I am so sick and tired of listening to car sales people try to upsell and teeter around what the price of the car is. I absolutely despise them. Has anyone had a good experience with online purchases? It seems to me like there are so many more options and a more competitive market. If you have had a good experience with a certain site please recommend!

Re: Buying a car online vs at a dealership

i search craigslist, auto trader, newpaper adds, etc. etc. often. where did i buy my civic? online at a site called lemonfree.com. i bought it out of imulse being i looked for a 5th gen stock for a long time before finding mine, and just did the buy it now option. long story short, i'm very glad i did; the owner was an older guy who always had it serviced at honda and just drove to work and back.

a couple months ago, i was looking on craigslist and found my cadillac. another great buy. the owner was about an hour drive from me, so i called him, went and test drove, and then made my down payment. you can look on ebay and sort from price range, distance from your address, private seller or dealer, etc.

maybe i just got lucky with my purchases, but i would say buying online isnt a bad idea at all, but test driving and talking to the owner first is a really good idea.

When you say online, I'm assuming you mean a private buy?

I found my car through Craigslist. Met up with the couple a week later, test drove the car, inspected vital parts, and paid them cash and happily drove home.

I prefer going private bc it's so simple and the prices speak for themselves but always be prepared and know what to inspect. Or bring someone who knows cars with you.

Re: Buying a car online vs at a dealership

Two weeks ago I purchased my 2nd Civic-LX in the last 9 months. It took me 3 months to find the car I eventually purchased.

Two internet sites that helped me get throught the process were
AutoTempest.com; which is one search engine that brings together the following car sites;
Ebay motors
CarsDirect
Craigslist
Cars.com
Auto Trader
GetAuto

AutoTempest.com simplifies the searching for the dealership/private party listings on the internet that you will be pouring thru. It does a rather fine job of it too.

The other internet site that helped me was CarBuyingTips.com.
The insider tips for negotiating the deal helped me alot.
The used car buying question list helped me "cut to the chase" at the dealership.

good luck, hope this helps....................mattandchris
