How long did it take you to learn stick?
Re: How long did it take you to learn stick?
I actually just learned how to drive stick about 4 or 5 months ago, but like you I was very nervous and jerky my first few times. It took me a little bit to understand the mechanics of it and get kinda decent at the take off without stalling or bucking like a bronco. After I got that down I decided that I didn't want to drive automatics anymore and started looking for a car that was standard. It wasn't really until about a month and a half ago when I got my first car that I really started to get the hang of it. It took me about a week or so of driving it everyday to become confident enough to drive like I would my mom's 91 Sonoma.

Took me one day to learn it and about a week to master it. I didnt drive stick or auto before, i learnt to drive with stick. Tip for learners, go out with someone who is patient or they will begin to get frustrated quickly.
you will stall while you are learning but its all apart of the learning curve. My moms story inspired me when I was learning. She bought her 94 White Civic DX brand new. the first time she drove stick was when she drove it off the lot. If my old chinese mom can learn on the spot I think anyone can. except my sister, she failed hard.

5 minutes. I dunno, I started on a dirt bike which is easier than a car. In my opinion it doesn't take very long to learn the basics but a lifetime to do it well. I always tell people I don't know how to drive an automatic and I've never owned one.
tips for learners? Start in a low pressure environment like a not too busy road or highway with a moderate amount of stops so you can get comfortable running up and down through the gears without dealing with alot of traffic. Don't ever put/leave your left foot on the clutch unless your changing gears.
BTW - everyone stalls a manual once in awhile even after years of driving.

I started with manual tranny's, sold that CRX @ 18 and haven't driven a standard since then. So... I don't know if I could drive a standard anymore. I mean, I was use to my car, plus it had a lame go louder pipe that made hearing the sound of when to shift a lot easier
I can drive bikes... but I don't know how easily that would transfer. Nobody I know drives standard lol. Both my other cars are auto's. (I know...). In fact my Porsche is the first ever to offer an automatic transmission lol.
