Maintenance Required on my 2k1

Today, while driving to my local Acura dealership to pick up some 85 watt blue halogen bulbs I hit the 8000 mile mark. I turned my car off and purchased them. The next time I started my car my Maintenance Required light flashed. I have been told that this is supposed to happen and my car needs a 10,000 mile check up. Well my friend, a fellow 2k1 civic owner and employee of the local Honda dealership, told me that it's not neccesary to get this check up and waste 100 dollars. How do I get this light to turn off without having to take it to take it to the Honda dealership???

look in index in back under maintenance light, it will tell you the exact page to look on and it will tell you how to do it. so you should try reading it as well, and you could always try a search bc there have been about 5 threads on this.
