Just inherited a 96 Civic HX with blown Headgasket and CVT transmission...What to do?
Hey,
1996 Honda Civic HX
258,000 miles
Auto transmission with CVT
I just got a free car that has 258,000 miles on it. That I have never driven or heard run. So I am unsure about the condition of the CVT transmission or if the engine will burn oil or not. The head is off of the car. I do know that when the head was pulled there was barely any oil on the dipstick and not even a drop of coolant was in the radiator.
I would like to get this thing running for as cheap as possible and make a reliable car out of it. I have rebuilt 3 other cars so I am experienced in a rebuild.
Engine: As far as this goes of course it needs a headgasket first of all. But at 258,000 miles It wouldnt hurt to at least hone the block and re-ring it. Does anone know of a cheap rebuild kit??? Think I would need new pistons and rods?
Transmission: I have heard that these are crappy transmissions. I have no idea if the current one is bad or not but for reliability purposes is there any bolt on trannys that would work?
Please help a Honda newbie out!!!!

Re: Just inherited a 96 Civic HX with blown Headgasket and CVT transmission...What to
You only gave ppl two hours lol. Wait a day or two. The crappy transmissions were the 4 spd automatic ones. I don't believe there have been the same issues with the CVTs since they work completely different. I could be totally wrong though... I'm speaking from what I know about 7th gens, not 6th gens.

I'm thinking about this rebuild kit.
