My friend wants to know...

How much horsepower does a typical universal muffler add to a car?

Actually, I think 2-3 hp is about correct. DC Sports TCS was 2 hp.

I'm no domestic car guru but an exhaust system in a domestic with 4X the displacement of a civic could be looking at 5-15 hp gains. Muffler alone won't do that much though... mostly for the sound/look...

Feb/Mar issue of Honda Tuning shows that a DAC SRI intake, DC header and DC TCS exhaust added only 5 hp at the wheels. That 's pretty pathetic.

yeah ... I agree it is pretty amazing that they tuned it so well. I'm just bummed that you can't tune it to get that much more horsepower out of it. At least not right now. Somebody will eventually figure a way, but it will be a while.

injen only says it adds 18hp at the wheels on an RSX-S not a civic.

It's not so much that you are getting more PEAK hp. But you are getting more area under the curve. Your car's dyno should show much more improvement under the curve (particularly in the mid-range rpm) with a decent exhaust. So you have to look at the whole picture... not just the peak HP which really doesn't do the exhaust justice.

you will be lucky if you get 4-65 hp from the mufflers...5-15 is impossible

they are mostly for look and sound only...with little hp gain

Or it shows how retarded the OBD III is...That is why it is so hard to get power from bolt on parts.

Mufflers will give you nothing, an exhaust system might give u a little... but at the price of low end torque

Exactly, a muffler does nothing, its simply for aesthetic purposes (sound and look). You actually lose some hp due to back pressure loss. There is a strong difference between welding a coffee can to your car and getting a total exhaust system.

Glad I read this topic i was going to start a topic asking how much hp exhaust system and intate would give me. So what everyone is saying is it's all for show and not for go. I have heard you can feel a difference though. Has any one timed there qtr mile time or 0 to 60 to see if there is a difference. I'd realy like to know my summer bonus is comming up last years was $1500 after taxes i was planing on spending all that on exhaust and intake since my I.C.E. is all done. But if all it does is just sound good I think I'll spent my money elsewhere hell i couldn't hear the pipe over the stereo any way.
