cvt tranny in racing, illegal????
hey, i found this article about a company which was developing a cvt tranny for f1 racing in 1994 but it was banned from the tracks. is this true for import racing as well? check it out

Interesting... They should allow them and force the various teams to do some R&D. Anyonme know if the HX's CVT tranny is better than its manual tranny? As in does it get a better ET in the 1/4 mile?

i dont know specifically but i would say there is a pretty good chance. the cvt keeps the rpms in the peak acceleration area for performace in sport and the peak area for gas mileage when in drive. add the fact that it never looses acceleration to shifting because it doesn't shift and i think it would win. the best way to do it of course is to start in low then once the engine gets up to above idling shift to sport. also, if you want a race start rev it in neutral and slam it to low as you take off.

I wonder how much horsepower the CVT tranny can handle? You know, if you decide to go with a turbo or some nitrous and it craps out on you. That would suck. Hum...
i read a post on it grey- they said that there is some sort of band in it- its ok at 115 hp but if you get over 130 it will snap and no i dont know if there is any way to "pump up" the band

Yeah, I figured that. A manual transmition has its limits as well, but it's usually more beefy. A new clutch is basically all you need. Well... Depending on the horsepower of course, but I bet ours can easily handle up to 200 horsies. Maybe even more?
honda cvt's can't handle much torque because they use a belt like design but the jetta is gonna be avaliable with a chain type design that can withstand either 230 or 240 ft lbs of torgue.

yes, but honda uses a STEEL belt design. most reports of cvts not being able to handle higher torque are based on earlier (non-honda) cars and those reports that usually talk about the civic hx always seem to be talking about the 6th gen wich was before honda refined the cvt tranny.
