Insurance on coupes typically way more?

So i'm 18, driving an 03 civic EX coupe, and have 2 speeding tickets...
i know my insurance should be pretty high, but my mom showed me the insurance the other day and it was almost $4k a year...

lately i've been looking into putting in a downpayment on an 05 sti, and my friend told me i'd probably be paying basically the same as I do right now because my car being a coupe automatically makes insurance classify it as a "sports car"(lol) and the fact that more kids drive these hondas and are more careless(not gonna deny that.. when i first got this thing I did a lot of really stupid things, but got lucky most of the time)

Re: Insurance on coupes typically way more?

Yes, a lot of factors weigh into rating your insurance

Main factors are:
Age
Experience driving (in years)
Record
Car
Miles driven annually
Year of car
Body style of car (2 door/4 doors)
Make of car
Types of hazards exposed to

Liability coverage
Property damage coverage
Collision deductible
Comprehensive deductible

These are just some of the ratings used, there are more

Re: Insurance on coupes typically way more?

cool, thanks man.. just wondering what do you think about how much my insurance would go up if I were to get an STi sedan from an 03 EX coupe?
I know there's no way you can tell me for sure, just roughly

Re: Insurance on coupes typically way more?

It would probably double. The Sti is a much more powerful, newer, more valuable car. The minimal amount you save by switching to a sedan would be negated by the switching to a car like a Sti. Honestly, for an 18 year old a 03 ex isn't a bad car. If you get into an accident in the Sti and you can't pay it off you'd be paying a huge premium on your insurance for years, its pretty easy to pay off the insurance on a Honda.

If your serious about this, call an insurance broker and get a rate quote.

Re: Insurance on coupes typically way more?

With your 2 tickets, if they are still active,
it would probably go up to about 6k a year, minimum

so about 500 bucks a month...

Re: Insurance on coupes typically way more?

^Correct me if I'm wrong, but if your in an major at fault accident and the insurance company investigation finds that your not the primary driver of the STI, your insurance would be void.

Re: Insurance on coupes typically way more?

haha thanks.. currently we have a rav4 that's my parents', and my civic. both are under my moms name, with me as an occasional driver... would it basically be like that or would I have to put myself as the main driver on the rav4 with my mom as an occasional and other way around on the 2nd car? or would that end up being the same thing?
sorry if that was kinda confusing, lol. appreciate it

oh, and i've also been in a not at fault accident where a lady passed me on the right while i was stopped and clipped me... insurance still went up, go figure

I'm not going into detail about it, that's just a general theory of how it works, and you didnt hear it from me, in fact, im going to delete any record that i said that, as I do not encourage fraud

And mindbomber, thats why i said "Dont get into an accident" XD

Haha, okay, I saw nothing ..

You don't really expect an 18 year old with an at fault accident, a couple speeding tickets, a few close calls and a Sti to not get in an accident do you?

Re: Insurance on coupes typically way more?

Well, considering the STI would be HIS car, I would ASSUME that he would be smart about it.
Then again, i could be dead wrong

I'm 20 and haven't had an accident, or infraction tickets yet. Besides a cell phone and parking ticket

Just get married, and then you can drive a coupe for the insurance price of a sedan.

Most of my friends insure their bikes by the day, the least expensive an inexperienced driver can insure a bike here is $5500 annually.

As far as insurance 14k for an r1?? Did you do a hit in run at some point?? My 01 civ and my 03 cbr combined is just under a grand with AAA . i do have a perfect driving record though.

at that time (back in the day), i had 3 speeding tickets (from my civic, not R1...ironic huh) + 1 at fault accident.

now, my full coverage for bike+car from AAA is just a shy under 4k.
