Tail_Gaters. Arghhhh!

I hate tail-gaters.

And its always gotta be a fixed up car, or a BIG freaking truck/van or something.

Others find it intimidating. I find it funny.

Usually, I let the car go and switch lanes but other times I play around (hey any rear end collisions in CA is auto - win for me). I will go even slower or I time it right so you can't switch lanes for the pass, by staying the same speed as the others cars.

I don't know but sometimes it does annoy the hell out of me, and if I wasn't over 18 and in a fixed up car I would have to resort back to ghetto days and start throwing peenies at the car.

I hate people like that too. Like some nights i am just cruising down the road and then someone comes up riding my @ss, and im like WTF?, I dont feel like fooling around and racing or any of that crap, thats what I hate. But one thing I would like to get is one of those setups for my exhaust where it shoots the fire out the back. So if someone is riding my @ss I just flick the switch and scare the **** out of them, that will teach them, and if they ride too close for too long I will char broil their front end.
What do you guys think?

That last tailgater I toyed with reacted like a crazy *** psycho, then tailgated me even closer! We're talking distance of less than 2 feet while moving 55mph on a suburban 2-lane road. I could see him in my rearview goin all crazy with the hand jestures and unheard swearing. This was NOT funny. If I were a psychiatrist(sp?), I would classify this guy as "Violent Psycho Who Just Escaped from the Loony Bin and is Looking for a Skull to Crack". The funny thing is, he was tailgating me bc the truck in front of me was going 5mph under the limit!

I did an extremly quick turn into a side street to lose the psycho, but he followed me! I drove slow on the new street bc it was residential and the limit wuz 30mph. This guy catches up to me (he didn't take the turn as well ), passes me, THEN SLAMS ON HIS BRAKES AND STOPS. Well I was on to this move and braked in plenty time. I could see him looking into his rearview at me doin this angry hand jesture dance and mouthing off a buncha choice words. I just sat there and looked at him blankly thru my sunglasses trying to to provoke him any further. Psycho speeds off. End of duel. (hopefully)

IF THERE IS SOMEONE (PSYCHO) TAILGATING YOU
A. Let them pass you. I'd rather have a pissed off-in a hurry-ready to tear someones head off driver in FRONT of me instead of behind me.
B. If they won't pass, turn off onto a side street. If they follow you, this probably means TROUBLE. so..
C. Try to get licence plate number and..
D. Drive to the nearest police station.

I wish I had gotten my tailgaters plate number. The police said they couldn't do anything without a plate. You might say I'm a sissy, I assure you I am not. This guy had me fearing for my life. Just think if he had a gun or something...

Another tip:
If you drive a car with a unique licence plate (vanity plates), custom paint job, anything that makes your car stand out, (I think most of ours do) - Don
't **** people off.

People will remember your car and might possibly take revenge later. My little duel with the crazy guy was I a car I longer own, with vanity licence plates that I no longer use. All I can hope for is he dosn't recognize the stoic Asian wearin sunglasses. (Side note: Asians are not exactly a big ethnic group in the south subs of Chicago.)

For the most part that statement is true but one thing you need to realize is if you are fu*king around and make them hit you or you brake check someone you are at fault. Brake checks are illegal in the state of cali and in most other states.

A rule that I like to follow is this: the closer someone tailgates, the slower I go. Reason?

1. About 60% of drivers, in my experience will back off or pass you then, b/c they realize you are not going to speed up for them.
2. If they continue to drive like this, then slowing down makes the situation somewhat less dangerous

I was driving the unmarked traffic unit the other day, (hidden strobes, regular license plates, tinted windows), and a moron decided to tailgate me, flash his highbeams, and continuously honk. I proceeded to stop in the middle of the road, turn on all lights and exit the vehicle. When I got out of the car, the driver saw me in full uniform and looked at me like I had two heads. I asked him to pull over and I reversed, got behind him, got back out and collected his information. 15 minutes later, I was presenting the driver with summonses for following too closely, improper use of the horn, improper use of highbeams and no insurance card. I told him to stop what he was doing because you never know who is in front of you. I never write summonses, but this guy pissed me off.

QCKSILVR. That guy just didn't know. Around here I can tell unmarked cars almost all of the time. They're all Ford Crown Vics with locked black wheels. Some have other features: search light, and huge antenna.

Our unmarked cars aren't like that. They are the police interceptor package with something called a "street appearance" option, which will make the car basicially look like the type of Crown Vic that grandmothers drive. Hidden strobes flash in the rear light assemblies on the back (turn signals, brake lights and reverse lights) and in the front, hidden strobes behind the grille, in the turn signals and alternating headlights. The red lights are mounted above the rear view mirror in the front. The wheels are regular ones, not the black hubcap style that are on marked sector cars and there is no spot light. Radar is hidden behind the glass in both directions. The guy was a few years older than me and said he had no idea it was a police car.

i say if it's two three or even four lanes
slower traffic should stay to the right
don't do 65 in the far left lane.

I agree with you too, plus it's also the law. The left lane is to be used for passing slower vehicles only. Therefore, slow moving traffic must stay right.

Hate to say it, but i'm a lil bit of a tail-gater myself...
I really don't know why I do it. Doesn't matter how fast or how slow the dude infront is going...I just do it.
I'm trying to kick the habit!

Ah, the art of brake checking...

Yeah, I remember a while back on the forums I heard quite a few stories of people being cut off... getting mad (yes, road rage), speeding to get in front of the person and then slamming on their brakes just because that law in California says that if you are hit from behind, it's that person's fault. Personally... I don't see why people would want to get THAT enraged over a situation such as that. I guess unless that person who struck the person from behind has a witness that the driver in front of them slammed on their brakes deliberately, then they are not at fault. I am not sure but that's what I was told. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOUR CIVIC. IT'S A GHETTO WAY TO EARN CASH FOR MODS.

Oh, and as for me... if someone's tailgating me, I usually drop it to 4th or 3rd and speed up if the lane is clear ahead of me. I will also get out of the lane. (I dunno, it depends on how much I'm pissed off... isn't it funny how easily ticked we can be at other drivers????) Sometimes I'll do the brake tap and people would change lanes to get in front of me. I would never slam on my brakes, get behind someone and flash my high beams, or honk my horn.

I think a LOT of people forget to drive DEFENSIVELY... even me. When they're angered, they can get very offensive.

Yep my dad is a tail gater has been for years now, but with his brand new accord I wouldn't be doing that. But yeah I like to tick off some drivers when I am going 30 in a 25 to drop to 25 just to make them mad. But yeah a friend of mine awhile back got a ticket for tail gating I just laughed my off to that one. I have found mostly the people that tail me are females and on some occasions old retirees, got watch out for old grandma who can barely see over the dash in her caddy LOL

As I often drive very early in the morning in a generally densely fogged area, it sometimes happens that I almost get hit in the rear by cars that see me in the last second, eventhough my lights are on.
As driving with my emergency flashers simply drives me mad, I devised a way to turn my brake lights on without having to press the brake pedal, using a simple switch and a relay driven by the Accessories voltage. This device only lights the two lower brake lights and NOT the upper one, so that even with these "Rear Fogs" lit, the car following me still gets informed when I really hit the brakes.
Now before some of you think that I'm in the wrong thread, I will add that what I now call "my Rear Fogs" really does wonders with most tailgaters on clear day or nights ! They just can't stand sniffing bright brake lights and, in a matter of seconds, they rush on the other lane and disappear on the horizon.
Not to mention that the moment I press the switch, well, THEY are the ones who brake and not me, then they necessarily get farther behind ...
I know this can be dangerous. I don't even know if my Rear Fogs are legal. I did hear that in England, though, Rear Fogs are standard equipment. As I doubt that they are an added set of red lights, I deduced that maybe they work in a way similar to my device.

Try it. You'll see ...

i tailgate people who are going too slow when there is a chance to pass them. if theres a long line of traffic caused by one a$$hole and im not near the front, ill stay back because theres nothing the person in front of me can do about it. if im right behind someone really slow (more than 5 under the speed limit) theyll get tailgated and if theres no passing zone close by theyll either get the horn or passed illegally if possible.

let me start by saying MOST AMERICANS DONT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE!!!

in europe, you drive in the right and pass in the left. i ALWAYS follow this rule when Im driving but sometimes ignorant people think they need to have their own lane and drive slow in the left. these people get tailgaited untill they move out of my way. sometimes they dont move, even though i pulled up behind them from 100mph. in this situation i may have to cut someone off who is in the right lane(i really hate doing this, but sometimes its either that or become part of a moving road block). I try not to tailgait people in the right lane because they are not in the wrong and dont deserve to be tail gaited.

to all the people who talk shet about tailgaiters, MAKE SURE YOURE NOT DRIVING IN THEN LEFT LANE!!! if you are, and you give a tailgaiter a hard time, you are a B!TCH and dont deserve to drive.

if im driving in the right lane and someone tailgates me, thats a different story. i will either let off the accellerator untill they pass, or if they really **** me off, ill scare them by dropping my car into the lowest possible gear untill they almost rear-end me and then take off!

the moral of the story is DRIVE IN THE RIGHT, PASS IN THE LEFT AND TAILGAITING WILL BE GREATLY REDUCED!!!

people should get tickets for going slow in the left lane!!!

I pretty much agree with what Flex said. I have summonsed people for driving too slow, and failure for slow vehicle to keep right.

Like I said in my previous post, if it is safe, I'll just speed up ahead real fast, hit the lights, slam on the brakes and get out. (I'm not supposed to do that, oh well). I'll ask the violator to pull over and then I'll pull over myself and start the summons process if I desire to issue. If someone passed me unlawfully, obviously I'd make a traffic stop. If someone passed me lawfully at a reasonable speed, I could care less. If I am speeding it is for a good reason and I'd probably have the warning lights on. I don't know who would follow me like that, and if they irritated me, I might call another unit.

I'm a tailgaiter......it might sound bad but I have the need for speed and the lead...if someone brakes on me they get passed...if you don't want to be tailgaited, go faster or get in the right lane...sure it's not safe, but I'm not married or anything, and I'm an excellent driver, so if you see a on your @ss, it's me ...and prepare to be passed...

If you are going to drive like a dare devil, assume the risk that the person you are tailgaiting might be a police officer. Off-duty officers do have the authority to make arrests and issue summonses too. I do carry tickets in my Civic, and most other officer carry tickets in their own personal cars as well. Also, you assume the risk you may cause an accident and end up in a heap of trouble...

qcksilvr, would you pull someone over if they passed in a legal passing zone on a single lane road going about 70 in a 45, but slowed back down to 55 after getting back on their own side of the road?

I think that is a perfectly legal and acceptable maneuver. If you are trying to pass using an opposing lane, of course you would want to pass as quickly as possible. Of course this is assuming that you are crossing a dotted line meaning that passing is legal on that stretch of road.

It would really depend. If I'm doing above the speed limit and the person passes me at that speed, I'm going to make contact with the driver and ask what they think they're doing. Granted you have to speed up to overtake another vehicle, but it must be done in moderation so as not to violate the speed laws.
