Rep Power: 293 treating an auto like a manual...
i have a an auto, and a friend of mine has an auto also. everytime he parks his car, he puts it in neutral, and then pulls the e-brake up, and turns the car off. i asked him, "why dont you just put it in park?", he said, "putting it in park strains the transmission, especially if the car is on a holl."
is this true? do any of you auto owners do this?

Rep Power: 0 When your car is in park, its not just your transmission that keeps it from going anywhere. There is also some part of your braking system that is engaged.

Rep Power: 293 ok, i guess it should be fine to put it in park when on a flat, level surface, but on a hill, put the ebrake up also(while in park).

Rep Power: 0 when ever i drive my friends auto i always do the same thing, more out of habit than anything else. like a some things that might be something that used to be true of cars when our parents had them, and so it just gets passed on.

Rep Power: 0 I have an Auto and I never put it in Nutral unless I am going through the drive through and am waiting. I do put my parking brake on when I park, hill or no hill. But I always put it in Park.

Rep Power: 0 I push my brake all the way down and put it into Park and then pull my ebrake. When I start up I push the brake down and shift into drive or reverse and then take off the ebrake.... Trust me, it does take off strains... sometimes when even on small incline and I don't put my ebrake on and I start the car and shift to my reverse or drive I hear the engine sorta strain. I donno. maybe its jus me... but im not lying.

Rep Power: 0 this sounds like a guy around here with a 2k1 who thinks his auto is manual. Needless to say hes had his transmission replaced twice, and he has about 20k on the car. Tell your friend to start treatin it like an auto, or trade it for a 7th gen manual.

Rep Power: 0 yeh guys yall are right......
i do the same exact thing. i put it in neutral then i lift the e-brake then in park. in da manual it says put the parking brake(e-brake) before putting into Park to ease off strain on da transmission. dats da way ive been doing it ever since i bought da car.

Rep Power: 293 i'm sorry to confuse some of you guys, my friends car is an auto, but its not a civic, i should've mentioned that in my original post, he has a 99 grand am gt. i dont know how he takes the key out, the keyhole in our van is worn out or something, so you can take the key out while driving! but his car is a 99, i doubt it should be worn out.
anyways, i think i'm gonna try what some of you guys said, push the brake, go from D to P, then pull ebrake up. i just hope i dont forget to release the ebrake the next day

Rep Power: 0 Tell your friend not to touch the gearsift lever to hard, because he might wear down the plastic around the gearshift on the console, which would then cause your console to falloff while driving, which would throw off your Civ's equilibrium, which would mess up your handling dynamics, which would result in...
Seriously though, how DOES he get his key out?

your transmission and driveline suffer a lot more under acceleration than while parked....

Rep Power: 0 Also on a really steep hill, the parking break might not be enough to hold the car. I've known ppl. to put the car in neutral (manual) and pull the p-break only to find their car against the curb at the end of my buddy's driveway Always use both systems when you park. I put mine in second thinking that that will hold a little better than first. The only time I don't put it in gear is if I am parked illegally, might as well not have the tow-truck driver strain the **** out of my tranny pulling the car out of the spot.
