steering wheel shakes
steering wheel shakes
about 2 weeks ago i put on my 17" rims on 205/40 tires.. it rides fine, and i haven't gotten the chance to go over 60 up until a few days ago, and i noticed the steering wheel shakes like crazy for about 4 seconds and then it stops for about 4, and repeats, car also vibrates a little... this only happens when im going 60 mph or more.. i got the wheels/tires balanced at sears but they weren't on the car... i'm pretty sure its from the tires, i have a lifetime garauntee on balancing, so if thats it, im just gonna get em balanced again...
any ideas?

Get the good ones, or check your rotors, if you are breaking too hard you might have to lathe the rotors so that they are smooth and your brakes can run smoothly at a high speed, does it happen when you brake abruptly??? Sorry you may already know this, but if you have the wrond lug nuts then that could be a possiblity, did you torque it down with a torque wrench, because they should be torqued at a certain weight, once again something you might know...
Make sure they installed the hub-centric rings when they installed the new wheels.
Here's another thread discussing it.

No, when u have 17's the weight is on the outside compared to smaller diameter wheels(which is mostly in the center) Usually, higher speeds will make the whole wheel react to road imperfects more readily than smaller/ligher wheels.
where can i get the rings and how much do they cost?? i think im gonna get them balanced again cus i think the lugs are fine
is there also like a generic kind of hub ring that i can buy for any 17" rim?

ive never heard of 12mm lugs......almost all honda's are 19mm.....some preludes are 22mm.....sounds like tire balance to me or centeriing rings are not there.....get them re-balanced, or have your rotors checked of it vibrates when you brake.....goodluck
The place where you got your wheels should have the hub-centric rings or should be able to get them. My new wheels made my steering wheel shake at highway speeds also, until they installed the rings and now it's smooth. Discount tire had them for like $5.00/set. Luckily they threw them in for free.
I have been experiencing the same exact problem. However as of this morning it has been solved. I took it to get re-balanced at an alternate wheel shop.
There is evidence to suggest that many wheel shops balancer machines are calibrated incorrectly, and so they will not accurately balance your wheel even though they think they are. After taking it back twice to the original shop, they didn't really fix anything. So I gave up on them and decided to balance it another shop. Afterwards it was smooth. The second shop said that the first balancing job was inaccurate, that was what was causing the problem. The shop said that because of the design of my wheels, it was hard to do properly, but that it could be done well if the balancer put more effort and detail into the work. I was definitely upset about the workmanship at the original shop.
In my search, I also discovered that one or more of the following can cause vibration in the tires:
I would check all the easy ones first, like tire inflation, damaged rims, lug nut torque. If those don't solve your problems, then I would check alignment.
