Scratch & Rust Removal

Hey all, so i've been doing a bunch of research for removing scratches and rust on a car. But even after all the articles i've read and videos i've watched i still have a lot of questions. For light scratches, the basic procedure is to use paint polish and a soft towel (cotton towel?) to mesh out the clear coat in order to remove the scratch. I'm just not sure of how to prime and repaint deep scratches after repair. For rust spots, you basically use a piece of coarse sand paper to get the rust off after applying mineral spirit, then prime and repaint. Is this all correct? I just need confirmation and some recommendations for techniques and what primers, paints, and tools to use. I have a Magnesium Metallic 2005 Honda Civic Sedan. Thanks in advance!

Re: Scratch & Rust Removal

you can really only touchup small dots or specs. large areas will require heavy body work and paint matching the entire panel. use scratch-x for clear coat scratches, and a sandpaper pen and touchup paint for small areas where the paint is gone.

Sandpaper pen? Those exist? How can i tell if a scratch is past the clear coat anyway? Also, can you recommend to me a certain brand of primer/paint that would be good this application?

Re: Scratch & Rust Removal

if you cant see paint, its past the clear coat lol. i just use the honda touchup paint and its worked well so far. never had it peel off. i just clean the surface with alcohol, clean up any rust if there is any, and put the paint on.

Re: Scratch & Rust Removal

Ohhhh okay, wow thanks thats exactly what i was looking for. So for the Honda Touch Up Paint, does it have primer mixed in? Also i've read so many articles about re-priming and painting but never do i hear about applying clear coat on top of the new paint, is there a reason for this?

Re: Scratch & Rust Removal

for small touchups you dont really need clear coat. its more of a hassle and not very practical to apply.

Re: Scratch & Rust Removal

Be careful when using the polish. If the scratches are deep into the clear coat you risk removing the clear coat to get them out. You do no twant to remove the clear coat!!!

Re: Scratch & Rust Removal

Oh alright. Well i don't think i need to worry about the clear coat coming off; I'm using Meguiars ScratchX2.0, it only has very small hints of polish. Its not like rubbing compound, thanks for the heads up though hehe. This is my list of materials for the job: Honda Touch Up Paint with pen and brush, Meguiars ScratchX2.0, Microfiber, Coarse/Fine Sandpaper, painter's tape. The sandpaper is for the rust removal.
