Is Warming up the car bad?

hey my friends have been telling me that its not good to warm up your car, but instead just let it run for half a min, and then just drive it with low revs. He said it was bad because its not good to leave ur car idling, just wanted to make sure, thanx

If your driving a lawnmower thats probably true, but I cant figure out for the life of me why it would hurt your car. Now. if you let it idle for a couple of hours or so, it might throw the idle speed off, but that would be it.

Same here I think for a little bit it wouldn't be bad on it, but yeah over hrs I could see issues.

dude, your friend is a complete idiot. you have to let your engine warm up at least for a couple of minutes. that lets your engine circulate oil. just dont race your engine immediately after you start it and you'll be good to go. later

Yes idling for long periods (over 5 mins) is bad. Combustion is not complete and forms oxides. Also, oil does not warm up and causes sludge. Just look at a car that only makes short trips (grandmas 83 fairmont with 10K miles) - the seals are shot, the oil is sludged!!

When cold, idle for about a minute, then drive slowly. If you only warm your engine, you are still driving with a cold drivetrain (ie- transmission), which is also bad.

Yeha, but grandmas 83 Fairmont is still 19 years old which would be causing bad combustion because the seals or gaskets have never been changed in that period of time. On a new civic, it doesnt matter.

As the car gets older, it is a good habit to let it warm up for a couple of minutes
before driving it, especially when it is cold.

I am pretty sure the owner's manual says something about letting the car warm up. I am pretty sure it says that driving the car gently and not revving the engine is better because the engine warms up quicker. The point is to get the engine up to operating temperture as quickly as possible without being hard on the engine.

your friend is actually right...well..
I used to think like that warming up for the car is good..but after I talked to few experts they all told me the same thing..idling for too long is bad for the car. Even the honda owner's manual states that 30 secs-1 min is sufficient time to let your car "warm up" . Ilding is bad for the valve train. it's gets no oil. Just start and drive under 3k.
I also heard that idling your car for more than a min and your engine will get damaged..the oil.

Per the owners manual you should just drive it to warm it up...

Letting car's idle for a long period of time is hard on the engine, the oil pressure is down and circulation is not at its best

The easiest way to tell if you car has warmed up yet, is to look at the tack, when you car is cold and you first start it, its at around 1100 rpm, when it had sufficiantly warmed up it will run at 750-800 rpm.....

just change your oil regularly, and you'll be ok.
