Auto vs. Stick vs. Sportsshift
Depends on the application. On our cars, the auto feels A LOT slower....to me at least. But go get some torque loaded domestic with a monster V8 under the hood and you probably won't even be able to tell.
shitftronic is only slightly faster than a regular automatic since they are just shiftable automatics, with a torque converter and all = slower than manual.. unless its one of the new ones that are electronic MANUAL trasmissions such as M3's SMG shifter or the ferrari's F1 shifter system
then those would actually be faster than stick..
Aside from how quick you can shift through the gears, there's also the issue of drivetrain loss. As a general rule, manual transmissions will give you the least amount of drivetrain loss as compared to an automatic or sportshift.
to understand this fully, you gotta look at the mechanics of each system
BASICALLY: <not gonna go in depth, but if you are interested, im sure you can find stuff on the topic>
stick --> mechanical connection, solid physical connection
auto --> fluid dynamics, force associated with moving fluid moves car
shifttronic --> same as auto, you'll you control the shift points, even on shift tronics they tell you not to downshift through to first when comming to a stop, bad for the tranny, funny, you arent supposed to do that in an auto either, i wonder why? The answer why is because you are gonna burnout the fluid by boiling it......

the shift tronic and sport shift crap are just fancy names for AUTOMATIC. the people who decided to put the F1 transmission in the ferrari and the triptronic crap in the porsche twin turbo should shoot themselves.
edit: there is no place automatics in sports car, especially exotic ones. i'll go postal on honda if they even think about putting one of those clutchless manuals in the si's or type r's.

i think audi has a new auto matic trans
i heard that its faster than stick
like it would shift gears and keep going in faster
and faster until u let go off the gas
hahahaha
i guess this is whats called high tech stuff keke!!!
GOooOOo audi!!

its actually just a stupid CVT tranny

A stupid CVT tranny? I'm so insulted. I love my CVT. Don't diss them until you've actually driven one!
<< funny how everyone busts on autos yet the auto MKIV Supra Twin Turbo was faster than the stick...
an exception just had to point out.. >>
Yep not all autos are slow. Mercedes almost always uses auto.
right, there are a lot of autos out there that are faster than stick cars. but that's not the point. if you spend all that mula on a "sports" car, then buying an auto version is a waste. the thrill of those fine machines is the ability to control it, not it controlling you.
oh, about mercedes. outside the us, mercedes are available in stick. the reason being a guess is that more people in america drive auto than stick and because people who buy mercedes are old farts who don't care much for stick. mercedes can never be in the same class as bmw for that reason. on the other hand, lexus has caught on and is offering the is300 in stick .

True... you buy a sports car to drive, not have the car drive partially for itself while you talk on the cell phone and eat a big mac
that said, my civic is an auto
probably get a 5spd if I did it again though... but hey it's a civic not a ferrari no big loss

sportshift/shift-tronic = automatic =
even if it could be faster in certain cars, i would still get stick because it would be a hell of a lot more fun to drive

On many brands, the "semi-auto" or "tiptronics" are slower, including Lexus and Audi.
The shift it yourself autos generally have the same gear ratio as the automatic as well, so it will be slower than stick for sure. They still use a torque converter.
There are a few "performance" ones out there, such as the F1 Paddle system employed by Ferrari and the MSG used on BMW M3 in 2003 models. This have computer controlled clutches, and will out perform everything, including stick.

<< astro, you bought an audi with CVT?!!
from what i understand, the newer civic has cvt autotrans, but i am not sure is it a full blown cvt like an audi or just a cheaper version of it
actually the HX civic has had CVT as an option for a while now... and yes I drove an HX as a beater when my previous car was in the shop getting warranty work (otherwise i'd have done it myself) and I hate the cvt, imho it feels worse than a standard automatic
if the car is "semi-auto" or whatever, can you still downshift to slow the car? obviously the car will slow down quicker if its in a lower gear, but I can bring the car to almost a complete stop without even touching the brake just using the clutch. how would this be possible in an "auto-stick"? plus, a clutch is a must when navigating the twisties!
btw, in Germany >95% of cars on the road are stick. If you have an Auto in Germany and it isnt an American import, people will look at you funny. Autos are for lazy Americans
