It's nice to see some people from the 'other' side having a relatively mature discussion about Corollas. Last summer, after test driving most of the cars in this class, it came down to the Honda Civic sedan and the Corolla. I decided on the Corolla because the suspension felt stiffer, it had 10 more HP, and noticeably better acceleration.

It is nice to get something that is different from what everyone else is modding. I must admit, sometimes it gets frustrating trying to find parts that will fit Corollas, but it also makes it more challenging. Hopefully now that the 1ZZ-FE engine is being used in more models (Corolla, Celica GT, MR-S, Matrix) we may actually see more aftermarket parts.

Were you talking about an Ex or Lx? The corolla has 130hp or are you talking about the new one?

Sorry. It was the 2001 DX (115hp) vs. the 2002 Corolla CE (125HP).

I believe the difference is more than that. Those are simply rated horsepower, not at wheel horsepower. It is a fact that Toyota is one of, if not the most, conservative raters in the industry. Take a look at the 145HP MR-2 Spyder if you don't believe me. I know it's a light car, but it's hits 1/4mile faster than a 200HP Honda Prelude. And that is just a base massaged Corolla motor as well, with no "lift" technology like the Celica GTS.

Even the 127HP Civic feels way slower than 130HP Corolla... and as states previously, almost 1sec difference to 0-60mph with automatics... I doubt there is only 3HP difference at the wheels. More like close to 10HP.

Nice to meet u all, my first post. But I've been lurking for a little while looking at all the posts.

I dislike Toyotas because in my opinion, they make boring cars. The only exception was the AE86. The reason why that model was popular in Japan was because it was rear-wheel drive and had predictable drifting characteristics. The succeeding Sprinter Truenos were front-wheel drive cars.

My civic's slower than a corolla? Kinda depressing, but what can you do. I bought a civic knowing its an economy car.

...However, it won't prevent me from trying to make it look nice.

btw, I have a question, how do I get more horsepower out of my car? Can I install vtec? Do 5 lug wheels fit on my car?

Heheheheh, dare I ask such newbie questions? Maybe I should ask if X brand rims will fit with X brand of tires on my car. But I think you ppl gotta lay back with all the newbie hatred. I mean c'mon, you were all newbies at some point or another. No need to put people down.

Going to get 205/50/16 MR7's with Eibach springs. Maybe see some of you at the west coast meet?

<< Glad that there are other sites running like this one. I hate it
when people come in here and put a link to a site they think sucks
because the car isn't as popular to mod as the civic. Just because
other people want to hook up other inexpensive cars or sport
compact/subcompact cars doesn't make the stupid. Toyota makes a
good product. There was just nothing appealing to me about the
corolla. It is always nice to see a nicely modded car no matter what
it is.

Rob...good point(s)

I think alot of you are making generalizations and statements that
are based mostly (not only) on opinions. It's understandable that
you would want to express that. But if you look at the figures, those
cars can compete pretty well with us. And you say they're ugly...but
in reality, that's YOUR opinion. I think my corolla was nice lookin
(another opinion). And I agree with Rob, I don't like people that
bash on other cars simply because it isn't as popular or easy to
mod. In FACT, people who hook up those cars should be given more
props. Not only is it harder for them to find parts, they often have to
be MORE creative than we do to accomplish things.

Thanks for the back up Yvette! U gotta undertstand that an ugly modded car can be attractive to someone else. Toyota will kick the crap out of HOnda in most cases, except on gas milage where most comprable HOndas do better. We sit here and make fun of people who mod corollas, kia, daewoos, metros, and u know what people make fun of us too!! Go to a corvette site or a clubsi, or clubRSX, they will say the exact same things that we are saying. "Why are they hookin up their civics, they will never be fast?" "That guy in the 7thgencivic.com site was braggin about a 15sec time with NOS!! HAHAH!" Cars are cars, mods are mods, whether u like that person's style is up to you. There can be some phat corollas out there that may look better than some of the mods we can do. It comes down to taste. I personally didn't look at the corolla because to me it was bland looking and it only comes in 4 door whereas I wanted a coupe. Thanks corolla guys, in my mind you are welcome here any time as long as u got good things to say!!!

Who you callin' ugly?

Actually, I preferred the look of the Civic sedan (I really like the tail lights!), but the '02 Corolla has grown on me.

Yea the new Corollas are tight...props to Toyota and I never thought I would like the looks of the Camry but they are pretty cool now. When it comes to style though, I don't think our Civics can be beat. I know so many people with cars that can smoke mine in a race but when we are on the streets I get the compliments and da ladies if you know what I mean
Believe me.....if u want stares a civic w/ rims and a streetglow kit will get you lots
