boat trailer
boat trailer
I am considering the purchase of a Civic Hybrid as my next car; I pull, however, a 800 - 900 pound trailer (for a Sunfish sailboat - low wind resistance when being pulled). What is your experience of the Hybrid pulling trailers?
Re: boat trailer
Haha, no way man. You are asking for trouble. Honda's have no torque whatsoever.....granted the electric motors have alot of torque, alot of it is not put to the ground
If I was you I wouldn't do it, ya know if you wanna replace your transmission at 30,000 miles.....point blank......do not tow with a civic!

Re: boat trailer
I think it would cause an accident. If I saw a hybrid civic pulling a boat I might start laughing so hard that I'd loose control.
Personally I wouldn't recommend using a civic to pull anything.

Re: boat trailer
I've seen the size of a sunfish sailboat. By no means should you be towing one with a civic, ever, period. Hehehe. Its ignorant even to consider it. Buy a cheap S10 beater just to tote it back and forth to the ramp or something. Anyone that has a fair amount of experience towing anything knows its more about inertia than anything else. Even if it had the power to pull it, try to stop in a hurry, or avoid something. The inertia from the trailer will push you all over the place. Think about how much nuts the vehicle will need to pull the boat out of the water on a slippery ramp, not exactly a civic's selling point. You could just about tow a small to medium sized jet ski safely with a civic. Any more would be asking for trouble.

Re: boat trailer
if you're wanting to tow a boat with a smaller sedan like our civic, check out the Subaru Impreza (WRX)...
i got a picture that my friend took while I drove on the highway of a WRX towing a fairly decent sized catamaran...i first laughed when I saw it, but after thinking about it, it seemed like it wasn't having any problem. (the catamaran seems about 2x-3x the size of the boat you're wanting to tow)

Re: boat trailer
Do they even make a hitch for the Hybrid? NO!
Will the regular Civic hitch fit, for the same year? YES
Here I found this:

I would not recommend doing this at all.
If you do it and have any problems, which you will, Honda will not repair it under warranty.
They will see that you have installed a hitch that was not purchased from Honda nor was it designed for your car. Also, there is no wiring harness for the Hybrid so you will have to tap into the wires if you plan on having trailer lights. So if you have any electrical problems, Honda will not repair it under warranty either.
Besides the aforementioned, you gas mileage will suck and you will put excessive wear on the car. I agree with everyone else, just pick up an old beater pickup and be done.
