Re: Manual or Auto

My 2001 Civic (got totalled 2 years ago) was a manual. Every car my wife and I own and drive are manuals. No slushboxes in the Supernootz Household!

Re: Manual or Auto

what i dont get is if all these people want to do manual tranny swaps, why didnt they just get a manual in the first place?

i knew that when i got my car it was going to be a manual...
but as far as shifting techniques, i find heel-toe breaking just as important as double clutching, its also fun to do ;]

How is the auto transmission in a civic? Its very sluggish in some cars.
How can you not drive what's easier? I learnt on manual, drive auto because I was given a 2003 Automatic Civic SI... I don't spend my time searching for the clutch...

Re: Manual or Auto

Can't be mad at the one guy who professes love for an automatic... but i have to call into question your love for the vehicle and the road. Aside from the fact that the you have complete control of how you want your car to move, the performance/speed is so much better! My very first vehicle was a Ford Festiva (hate all you want, i know it was a pile, but i loved it!), manual, and my friend owned a brand new 2001 toyota celica automatic. EVERY time we raced, the festiva won be a landslide... or maybe that's just saying something about the quality of toyota's :P

Stick all the way. I've had 3 cars a 94 prizm stick, 91 legend sedan auto, & now 94 vic lx stick. Even though in my case its tough getting used to a 1.?L like less that 100hp from a 3.2L 200?hp v6

Re: Manual or Auto

I prefer manual to automatic for sure. But you're a ****ing retard if you spend your time sitting in an automatic feeling around for a clutch. I don't street race, I don't need to go from 0 - 60 quicker then what I do now (about 8 seconds).

They don't make the SiR in automatic I don't think, but they make the SI (just the little coupe) in automatic. Again, had it been my choice, I would of got standard, but the car was a gift, and I'm certainly not gona' spend money to put in a cheaper transmission, that would be stupid.

Re: Manual or Auto

I would imagine if you drive it right, there would be... but in general, does a stick save on gas?
I haven't exactly learned a stick yet, but in a week or so I am going to my dad's house, and he has a 5 speed mazda tribute, and I can learn it on that. Depending on how I learn it/like it, my civic might have a manual trans.

if you had a choice at the time of purchase and chose auto over stick, you're either a grandma or must be missing your right arm....or both.

Re: Manual or Auto

Hehe, every British member of these forums will have learned to drive in a manual, I'm guessing - if you learn to drive in an AT car in the UK, you can't even get into a MT without passing another test and upgrading your licence, so it's the standard to learn in a MT. I love driving manual cars, just feels right, although I've never driven an automatic so I guess I can't really make a comparison.
As for double clutching, I've driven classics from the mid-Sixties with no synchromesh on first gear at all and still managed without learning it, although in even older classics it's a must-have skill. I simply figured that going slow enough to need first gear means that you can simply stop briefly enough to put it in first and then get going again.
I tend not to ride the clutch at lights because, having driven such old cars, their clutches tend to be very tough to hold in for a long period of time, it's just easier on the left leg to put the handbrake on and slip the stick into neutral. I got it down to a fine art whereby I could get into first and be moving before the clutch-riders were even aware that the lights had changed at a junction! I also find other people's brake lights too bright; feels like free laser eye surgery, especially at night!

If there is a heavy traffic, then I'd go for the automatic. If there's none, then manual all the way baby!!! I currently drive a manual

Re: Manual or Auto

i have an auto but i really wanted a manual. but...i was in need of a car and civic was my choice and for the price and great condition i couldnt pass it up. so i got stuck with the auto. im planning on getting a swap soon. my car has 93,000 miles and you can really feel the auto trans slipping 1st-3rd gears. it pisses me off so bad . plus 93k miles, its time for a new trans anyhow, why not swap? i just love the feel of shifting gears. its like holding hands with your car

I had a Camaro before my 97 civic ex and I couldnt stand it cause it was auto so when I was looking for my civic sure there was alot of good deals on auto EX with low miles but I said **** that and went and took the time and bought a car with a little more miles just for the love of the 5 spd.

Re: Manual or Auto

I have an automatic, because my wife can't drive a stick.
I love sticks, in my country, 95% are stick and it's a lot more fun to play with the gear box than letting the car decide when to upshift or downshift...

I use to drive a auto, but now from driving a manual, I will never go back, even living in LA with all the heavy traffic. It just feels like I have more control over my car in a manual. No offense to those who drive an auto.

Re: Manual or Auto

mines an auto, driving in an out of the city everyday, its easier, but i learned to drive on a stick and want another. open roads would be worth the pain of the city clutching, at least to me
