Hey, I just have a quick question I need answered to settle a disagreement with someone at work. Does the block heater in you vehicle warm the oil or the coolant? And what is it for the civic? I think its the coolant, but he says its definetly the oil. Thanks!
P.S. Its kinda funny how little some people on this site know about block heaters and even what they do, one even asked if it could be cordless!
. Up here in northern Alberta, everyone has one and definetly uses them in the winter. Makes it way easier to start and warms up faster. The dealership I bought my civic from installs them in every vehicle, free of charge. Not meaning to pick on anyone!

Most 'block' heaters consist of small electrical heating elements mounted into a replacement 'frost plug' installed on the engine block. The heating element reaches into the cooling jacket surrounding the cylinders so that it is directly immersed in the coolant full-time
By the way, a key benefit of warming the coolant is to warm the cylinder walls to reduce the percentage of incoming fuel that condenses on the cold metal and contributes to non-start/flooded engines.

I got one for xmas, looking to install it soon... how hard is it to install... can it be done as a driveway mechanic, or should I just pay for it at a shop (what am I looking at labour costs?)
the ones that are oem are through the coolant., such as the one displayed above. Another one that you can get from partsource or napa is a magnetic heater that sticks to your oil pan and warms it through heat transfer.
Im not familiar with the oil heater, but with coolant install, you will need to do a coolant flush to install it. If you are not experienced with coolant (or have no place to dispose of it), you should let the shop do it.
