When is the best time to buy an SUV?
When is the best time to buy an SUV?
I'm helping my mom buying an SUV (she provides the money and I the research). I've decided to get a highlander. But based on what I know, there's always an end-of-the-year sale. When I talked to the dealer, he told me that the 07 model will be out early next year (jan or feb). So should I buy one now or wait for the end-of-the-year sale? How much can you save on average? Is it worth the wait? I'm planning to get either a new 06 or a used 06 with less than 20k miles. thanx for the input.

the year end clearances will be starting shortly, usually in august or so is when you get the biggest discounts.
my advice- get a 4runner, or a rav4....those are both legendary toyota names and will be around forever. the highlander is done after the 07 model year, meaning worse resale value when they go out of production.

if you really are not sure, go to the dealer, and see how 'forceful' or desperate they are to get rid of their 06 Highlanders. If they are not, it's not that time yet. If you can get some sort of deal, don't get used 06.
the '07 models should be coming out very shortly, like a month or 2, and as for buying an SUV... wait about another month when gas prices are ASStronomical. You should be able to use high gas prices and the fact that the new '07 models are out to your advantage to getting a good priced '06.

i got this info
Hello, I just spoke w/ an old friend who turns out to be a Toyota zone manager (have not talked for years.. he moved ect). He shared Toyota is not done w/ the redesign and will bring it (complete new SUV, still named Highlander) out in the spring/early summer of 2007 as a 2008 model. Just and FYI.

you could do the model year end clearence or you could wait till the end of the year when theres just a few models left on the lot. you wont get much selection then but usually those cars are discounted to move off the lot as most cars at car dealerships are on bank loans by the dealership and they rather not have the interest pile up. I guess the 06 Highlander just escaped recalls: http://www.autoblog.com/2006/07/13/t...-extravaganza/

notice all the recalls lately though, haven't been anything too serious. the highlander one is for some plastic clips that might fail and make a piece of plastic fall in the gas pedal area. the tundra one was for the dealer to remove the stereo console and clip 2 wires that lead to the airbag cutoff switch, removing functionality, meaning you can no longer turn your airbag off. (something to do with carseat safety for kids)
the recent camry recall had to do with the 6spd aisin automatic trannies failing/tweaking out, which affected 1% of all 07 camrys sold at the time (less than 5000).
