i really like the s2000 but don't u think turbo engines are better for performance modding? a intake exhaust and get u 20 hps easy..upgrade 16G turbo with a FMIC that babay coudl fly...nothin against the s2000 but i just like turbo engines more..just my $0.02

booohahaha (spelling??) An S2000 can take a turbo just as well as a car that comes with it out of factory. They do not build up the internals of turbo engines like you might think. Honda's N/A engines are built better/stronger internally than mitsu's turbo engines, or VW's turbo engines. there is a turbo upgrade for the S2000 made by speedcraft.... it includes a gasket to drop the compression. The S2000 can run 8-10psi safely with no more wear and tear than your VW's 1.8T. Or other such 4 cylinder with forced air induction for that matter. But I'll bet your VW 1.8 doesnt run high 11's with it's turbo.... does it. (S2000 does)
what about lotus? --- the ENGINE aint that cars strength -- it weighs well under 2000 pound.. thats where most of it speed comes from
s2000 --- i heard that they cannot handle turbo/superchargers b/c of the compression ratios becomming very high with them.
mine would be the wrx sti or the EVO 6 (wrc of course)
this is all IMO

you have to take into account there are n/a and forced induction....then think about the different block configurations there are, inline, boxer, and the rare v bank 4 cylinders (out of production)
honda makes the best normally aspirated inline 4s in the business...bar none...power, weight, smoothness & reliability...other mfgrs have to turbo or have large displacement to outdo a n/a honda
for forced induction inline 4 cylinders...that's a tough call...you can easily get a crvtec with a t04 turbo to get 400whp...of course the engine is also modified with lower compression pistons, etc to increase boost...but this engine is a frankestein and not production...i'd probably vote for the 2g dsm t28 turbo...good power and decent reliability
best n/a boxer 4...good old porsche inline 4 from the 944...great engine...shitty reliability
best fi boxer...subaru wrx sti (jdm)

Snowman, I didnt know there was a price limit here. And I was simply answering his statement that the S2000 can't be S/C'd or Turbo'd easily. The S2000 can take a 6psi S/C just fine, and can take the turbo with 8-10psi just fine. Remember, the turbo kit comes with a gasket to drop the compression. I think that the best 4 cylinder should be looked at with 2 different brackets. N/A and F/I. N/A... S2000 of course.

i know what you mean but what i am tryin to ask is which in line 4 engine do u think is the best with out any mods...sorry about the confusion...but the EvoVII still gets my vote

That's a V6 dude. >>
I think he's talking about the 1.8T (180hp), but it's not very light.
SVT Focus 2.0 liter.
(C'mon, where's that Focus guy?)
I agree that the S2000 has an outstanding engine, albeit with a more limited availability.

Ha. That's funny. Amazing how someone can be soooo into this engine and think its the best 4 cylinder out there, and say it's their pick for 4 cylinder engine. (how much do you really KNOW about this "great" engine you are picking when you dont even know how many cylinders it has???)
busted

i guess he mean that the GTI is so great in our class..it can't be compared the other v6 turbo's so they need to compare it with us il4's..u know just to make themselves sleep better at night...but actually us il 4's can smoke them...in reverse...

the new 1.8Ts are 180 hp. the VR6 is a V6 and its not 180hp. in fact, its less. 174 hp. and its not a light car. its pretty heavy. if I remember right, 2800lb+ easy 14 my butt. heh. low 15s is possible though.
I'm pretty impressed with the output from the new 1.8T, but I wouldn't pick it as the best. I duno why you guys are picking it as the best.
in fact, I wouldn't even really consider turbo engines.
and why are you guys comparing cars? heh. this is about engine. the question was pretty specific... best engine, not what comes along with it. (granted thats obviously important, but the topic was pretty specific I think.) if you add in other factors, it mighta s well be like best car or best 4 cylinder car or whatever.
in anycase, I can only think of the F20C in the S2000... but I'm sure there's a handful of other high output NA 4 cylinders (I just dont know enough to know them.)... 120hp per liter is pretty wack.
<< Lotus gets my vote, although an F1 would probably smoke the **** out of it. ..R.S. >>
have you ever driven a lotus with the rover 1.8?...it's terrible...it has a small powerband and the torque curve isn't very flat...in fact it's soo poorly designed that the US won't let lotus import it with that engine b/c of terrible emissions...plus they develop cylinder ring leakage with little abuse and start smoking...theres a link below to a site about the lotus elise talking about how bad they are too...read up
you can get a lotus elise with the itr b18c5 that is race prepped to 200hp...0-60 in 4.3 seconds...go to the link
