Anyone have a switchblade style key?
I'd like to get one of these made but don't know where. Maybe there isn't even a company that makes them. I know you can get the keys on Ebay but they don't have a programmable microchip in them.
Last time I had this much fun some furniture got broken!

The problem is that we have the chip in the keys so making would would be a huge pain.
You could probably do a custom one, from like a vw key or something similiar, but I cannot imagine it looking that great in the end.

So here's my plan of attack. Can anyone confirm it doesn't work?
1. Buy used VW switchblade key from Ebay
2. Buy blank uncut blade from Ebay
3. Have uncut blade cut to match my key.
4. Swap newly cut blade into switchblade key (They're interchangable)
5. Open up Honda key
6. Remove microchip and swap it into the VW key.
7. Seal up VW key and fiberglass over the buttons since I wont' use them anyway.
8. Paint and gloss key to make it look pretty
9. Hope for the best.
The only question is with 6, how does the microchip work? Does it just have to be that close to the ignition, or is it actually wired to the key somehow? It'd be easy if it just has to be in there somehow.

Is step 2 a blank VW key blade? The VW keys I've seen are cut the oposite of the way ours are. I'm not sure you could get it cut right, or if it would fit/is the right size. But really I have no idea. If you mean a blank Honda blade... if your taking apart your key anyway, why not use the one you already have?
I've heard the chip in our keys works through the key, not through the air... but the things I've read about swapping to a key with a remote on it mentioned nothing about it, that I can remember anyway.

And take it apart and replace the blade with a new one of these

The only reason I would buy them separate is because it's twice the price for a new uncut one.

is how a key looks/works seriously gonna make you that much happier with your car? i just dont understand the logic behind this key business. Seems like alot of time/money/effort just to make a pretty key.

thats why it's a public forum. im not critisizing, it's just one of those things. Just how not everyone agrees with what ive done with my car. i was simply inquiring/observing.
I have 5 bucks that in 3 months another guy with less than 500 posts will ask the same question. I bet it will still be the same result as the thread like this that went down 3 months ago, 6 months ago, and 9 months ago.

there is a sensor in the ignition cylinder that sense when the key is inserted and processes if it's the right key....
-take that sensor out.....electrical tape your regular key to it......
-go do your switchblade key thing with a regular honda key (non-chip)
voila.....
-take that sensor out.....electrical tape your regular key to it......

I don't get it. So if I slide in just a regular cut key and have my actual key with microchip near the ignition, will it start? Even though the key in the ignition doesn't have a microchip in it? That's what I assume from your post, so therefore this should work if I transplant the guts of my key into the VW switchblade key.

ok.....take the key you have now......right now in your hands.....you're going to tape it to the sensor that you are going to take out of the ignition cylinder..you're going to take the sensor with the key taped to it and stick it somewhere out of the way, but it is still going to be connected by a wire......then you put the ignition cylinder back into the steering column WITHOUT the sensor and key....then you're going to get the new key in the mail...the one without the chip....you're going to get it cut...you're going to then be able to start the car with the new key and not have any problems....

when i had my remote starter installed in the civic, they told me they would just take my [valet] key and place it in a box somewhere w/i the dash of the car... I'm not sure, but I was under the impression that they didn't need relocate any sensors from the ignition, i.e., the key's chip w/i the car would be sufficient proximity.
But of course this is only what I assumed was how it works, i have no factual support

if it is RF it is a really poor antenna like diskreet is saying....cuz when I worked @ Wal-Mart I cut a key for my doors and tried it in the ignition with my key on my belt loop...and nothing....
I can tell you the FORD chips are the size of a grain of rice or smaller....I would think the Honda one is the same size....
