bigger tires will slow you down, but you wont really notice it unless you have a truck and you put those huge off-road lookin tires on it. It slows you down because there is more friction to the ground which takes more power to push. But in our case a stock 15 to an aftermarket 18 isnt that big of a deal. Like he said, maybe a .2 difference in the 1/4

yeah..eloquently put nobottlejustthrottle...
blah..yes 18's slow you down...significantly...weight/rolling resistance/larger diameter*affects final drive ratio*

and why on earth are you bragging about beating a stock auto sedan..an auto Civic EX of any year has to be THE slowest car on earth.... Itake that back, and auto DX/HX is....

listen to mister ricer Trevor...I dont have any personal equations that support this. It is a well known fact, and has, infact, been discussed on here many times, and the same answers always surface.

hey guy..i dont have 14's....
and you know what? give me 12" wheels, and i'll still spank you and your gh3y 18's...
remember...big wheels do not a cool man make...
and the difference is probobly more than a tenth...do you really think you can feel a difference of a tenth of a second?
doubtful...and yes...On my 99 civic..i noticed a HUGE difference between 14's and my 17's...and now on my neon...I put 15's from the turbo car on, and it felt much slower...and vice versa..the turbo car feels slower (cause the tires boil) but from a roll, it's quicker than it was with the 15's...

simple logic ricer-san....

well,,that tenth id like to see your equation if any more........prove it.....
Im just sick of all these morons that think if they put 18's on there car there gonna be slower than a damn insight.......
Most peolpe do not have the equation to prove the fact.
Do YOU?
exactly......before you speak and say that they ARE SOOOOOO much slower...prove your point.

And when I see the equation proving that my 18's make me 2 seconds slower in the quarter....then I will shut my mouth and take them off.........(like i said earlier....I dont care about a tenth)

there you have it.

you ought to shut your mouth right now, your making uncle ben jealous...

how much does a stock 2k1 rim weigh? how much do your 18's weigh...what is the overall diameter of a stock wheel/tire? what is the overall diameter of your 18" wheel/tire. WHere is the weight located on the 18" rim? where is the weight located on the 14" rim...think young grasshopper...you dont NEED mathamatical equations....

everytime you OPEN your mouth, you make yourself look more stupid...did i say you were slower than an insight? all i claimed is that 18's will slow you down...that's a fact, jack(***)

thefirstthotboy..........that is not the equation
if that was the case........i'd be going faster w/ 18's cause they are smaller diam. than stock.

BUT DRJ has the equation.......as i have almost figured......that does not give enugh info....

MY whole point is,,,,,,,,is that w/ 18's your not losing more than a half second at the MOST off of your quarter.......
so for all the peolpe coming to the bored......you guys are telling them "dont get 18's cause you ll have a slow arsse car"......well that would **** me off if I chose 15's cause of lack of info........

SORRY for sounding like a dck people......but screaming has this thing out for me..........thats all....

Here's an example that will allow you to understand the difference each inch makes. I don't have the equation to tell you how much of a difference it makes, but try this.

On a 10-Speed bike...try to start the bike at the highest gear. Now try to start at the lowest gear. The diameter difference isn't all that much on the bike, yet it makes a HUGE difference in your ability to move - does it not?

You, most likely, have the ability to change the gear on the pedal in addition to the gear on your rear-tire. A car does not afford you that same luxury.

So, let's examine the size of a gear and the size difference between them as opposed to the tire size on your Civic. The diameter of a gear on your 10-speed will be between 3" and 5" (most likely within that range). Notice the difference when you're talking about minor inches on something with a small diameter? That's only a 2" difference.

Now, let's apply that to a tire that's already quite a bit larger. Now, let's make the difference 3" (going from stock 15" to your 18"). Remember that you can't change the ratio coming from the transmission. The amount of torque from your engine is no different, however, it's ability to transfer that torque to the outside of your tire has been reduced.

Lets take this one step further. You engine spins at (for the sake of argument) 3000rpm's. Now, imagine that you have a small wheel connected to a large wheel via a chain (much like your bike). Let's say that the number of revolutions needed to spin the large wheel via the small wheel is 5:1. So, using that number, your engine could spin that wheel 15000rpm. Now, let's make that second wheel larger. Now the ration is 10:1. Does this mean that your engine will spin it 30000rpm? In a frictionless environment - yes. Do we live in that frictionless environment? No. So, applying the bike example to this, do you think that it will effect your 1/4-mile time significantly? I think it would.

Basically, larger tires sacrifice a significant amount of time on your 1/4-mile ETA, but, if speed is your thing, it will increase your top-speed fairly significantly.

I know this isn't an equation, but, I will try to find the equation that will show you that you lose a lot more than a half-second in your 1/4, but use this example as a reference until then.

Look at this everybody:

LOOKIE

my stock tire size 185/70/14 compare them to my new tires 215/35/18.... <---Put that info in

I think everybody is missing the point, you keep talking about RIMS... what about the tire size to make up for the larger/smaller rim?

I didnt even read your whole post luv,,,but my 18's w/ 35 series tires are the exact circumfrence of the STOCK WHEELS AND TIRES,,,,,,,and that is the point you were trying to make right?????
a ten speed w/ big wheels??????

well my wheels and tires are the exact same as stock.......so there goes your theory.....

what we were talking about earlier......was the weight......

ALTHOUGH YOU can buy light 18's........so whatever ........I QUIT.

haha. This was a cool post to read. Very entertaining.

I feel impelled to say....not only do 18's look better, but the difference isn't or shouldnt be that much. Least not to argua about anyway.

And Screamin'...no offense. I know this is a free country and all. But, why are you here?

if you put the right size tire on the overall diameter won't change
of course the width does increase 185 cm stock vs 215 cm
more rolling resistance put better grip
on my old car I got better acceleration just due to the fact I had grippier tires
it was a Dodge stratus ES v6 auto w/ 195/65R15 stock tiresand I put on 205/55R16s
and for screaminDOHC, dodge sucks big time

People, I have to admit...these are some pretty stupid comments.

As for screaminDOHC...why is he here? To provide useful information. trevor asked for proof for something and screaminDOHC started conversation that led to proof. Dodges suck? Now I love my Civic and all, but I would like to be the first to point out the very large and developed Vehicle Issues/Problems forum that this site has. And as for a car making someone stupid...I guess 7th gen civics have the same effect on some people because that probably was the stupidest reply I have read on the site.

All I can say is that it's comments like this that make other groups hate on us and our cars.

ok, I'm not a physics expert by no means, but the way I look at things, if you keep the over wheel diameter the same as stock, the only thing you can factor in to slow you down would be weight and overall tire area. I know 18"s can weigh a lot, but how much is a set of 4 wheels that are 5-10 pounds heavier than stock wheels (I made those numbers up) going to make. You are looking at a max of 20-40 pound difference. That there might drop a .10 off your 1/4 mile time. woopee.

I think the biggest factor would be total tire area that contacts the road, but sometimes this can help more than it can hurt, especially compared to stock firestones. ok, if I sound like a complete idiot, feel free to say so, but it all makes sense to me.

Trevor, I say sport the 18"s and you be the judge whether or not it slows you down. nothing is better than the "a$$ dyno" and "a$$ speedometer"

i hate to agree with this guy but he is right. you may have the same Circumference as stock, but you have increased your rotating mass. you never hear of anyone wating to get a heaver fly wheel, have you?

i also can't believe that you have not noticed that big of a diffrence. after i put my 17's on and then put on headers it felt like i was back to my stock wheels.
dont flame me for telling the truth!
