No, it's not bad. Less resistance than 10W-30, so you effectively have more horsepower. It protects the engine well too, for the horsepower that we have. If think that if you were to upgrade your engine's output by more than 50% then you could benefit from switching to 10W-30. The thicker viscosity would cling to the internals more than 5W-20 does, so you'de have a little more piece of mind when the engine is revving hard and the pressur inside the combustion chamber is way above stock. It would alleviate the extra stress put on your piston rings somewhat. I wonder if we have 3 rings, or 4? Probably 3. I wonder if upgrading your pistons to ones that use 4 rings would be better for higher horsepower?

I think the real reason motor companies are recommending using 5W-20 weight oil is because the engines themselves are being built to higher tolerences. With this higher tolerence, you dont need as high a weight of oil to do the same job as before.

That may be true for you engine but not for mine. The engine in the 7g Civic is a new designe with closer tolerances and really should use 5w20 or maybe 5w30 in very hard use applications.

The Focus has a 10+ year old engine design, it was originally specced at 10w30 in warm climates and 5w30 in cold climates, now it is supposed to use only 5w20.

Ford knows that the engine won't fail either way until the engine is well out of warranty and it gets them another 0.25 MPG for their CAFE ratings so they screw over the consumer.

In teh next couple of years they will be releasing an all new engine in the Focus (it's already in the Escape and Ranger) which is actually designed for 5w20.

If you have a 7g Civic I would run 5w20 or maybe 5w30 it it pushes or exceeds 100 degrees where you are.

I use to own a 90 integra which leaked oil through the cam seals. When I used regular conventional oil 5W-30, it would not leak at all. But when I used synthetic 5W-30, it would leak constantly. Regardless of the weight, the synthetic was a thinner oil which would leak through my cam seals. Acura even stated that to be true.
If you want to run 5W-30, use synthetic such as Mobil 1. The thinner oil should be closer to conventional 5W-20. Mobil 1 will NOT produce a synthetic 5W-20 because the oil is just too thin and will break down very fast. That is the statement I received straight from Mobil 1. They recommended using the 5W-30 as an alternative which in my opinion would be equivelant. However, if you really want to use 5W-20 oil, Honda's oil is actually rated above all the major brands and right under Mobil 1. In fact, Mobil produces the oil and slaps the Honda OEM stickers on them.
Regardless, the manufacturer cannot void your warranty because of the weight of the oil as long as the oil meets the API guidelines. I contacted three of my dealers within my area to confirm this, and they even told me that they still use 5W-30 regardless.
So I think I'll continue using Mobil 1 5W-30.

Mobil 1 is researching a new 5w20, they just havent made a good batch yet. When they do, they'll change their tune about 5w20 being too thin. Amsoil has a top rated 5w20 synthetic, and thats all my motor has seen after that first break in oil change at 7500. IMHO amsoil is much better than mobil 1 & RP

I agree with Avenger, the Amsoil 5W-20 XL-7500 is the oil I use in my 02 coupe. I felt confident in this product, but not in a mineral-based 5W-20 (non-synthetic).

went to my dealer today to get an oil change (i'm too lazy to do it myself) and he puts 10w-30 in it! Says they only have that type and they recommend it on all their cars. Some bs about the heat and humidity of florida blah blah blah. I think they're just too cheap. At least it won't really hurt my engine. Time to do my own changes

Since I already have 50,000+ miles on my car, I've had many oil changes, and change between 5w-20 and 5w-30 depending on availability. I have noticed that the car runs better up the hill on my commute and gets an additional 1 mpg/gal. when using 5-20.
