something in the lines of having a sportmatic or an SMG right?? basically an automatic. but you know what i'm saying. a lot of auto transmission cars come with smg type shifting available or sport shifting anyways.

If the auto tranny in question is the DSG from Audi, it'd be not toooo bad.

Still though, stick always seems more sporting, offers more control over the car. Anyone who has had to drive a 5spd(/6spd) hard can relate to this.

yea of course, but have you driven a fast car with auto? i thought it was alot more fun than my civic 5spd. and alot more fun than alot of other cars i've driven that had manual. my friends slk32amg is damn fast, and i wouldn't complain saying it wasn't fun to drive cuz it didnt have a manual tranny. saying that having an auto tranny with alot of HP is useless, is an ignorant statement. they made SUPRA TT's in auto, those are still fast.. no? M3's come with SMG's they're damn fast still, same with the new M5 and M6, those are hella fast too. so the ones here saying auto is useles.. you're telling me because these cars dont come in MANUAL, you wouldn't buy them? or have fun driving them?

A Sequential Manual Transmission (SMG) or 'F1 style' shifting all has to do with MANUAL cars with electronically controlled clutches and shifting.
They also have shiftable automatics, which have no clutch and are really just an automatic with 2 switches (paddles) that allow you to tell it what to do. It is still an automatic by definition of it's parts.
(for everyone here)
Let me give you an idea of both of these things:

SMG
Pros:
*True Manual
*Fast shifts
*Strong transmissions
Cons:
*Rougher ride than automatic
*Lots more components to break over a regular manual
*Less controll over the manual transmission

Shiftable Automatic
Pros:
*Smooth ride
*Fully automatic mode
*Computer can prevent you from shifting down at too high of an rpm
*Offers luxury and sportiness depending on driver's mood
*Can be geared same as a manual, and shift roughly the same speed. Basically comparable accelleration times on same gearing
Cons:
*Not as strong as a manual transmission
*Computer checks your every move and if it is deemed 'safe' then allows the shift
*Much more electronics than necessary, all of which can fail
*Shifts can be excessively slow and/or delayed
*Sometimes these are geared very poorly

Its also important to note than any fast shifting (aka well designed) auto or smg transmission will shift faster than a regular manual. Humans are too slow.

EXACTLY!!! freekin thank you for saying that, and i forget who it was that said auto's were useless earlier that i quoted. you need to come back to reality man. auto's may have been a bit crappier back several years ago but, you have no idea how good they are now. regardless of if they might have more problems or more electronics or just more equipment to maintain.

many fast 1/4 mile times have been put down on built autos for all cars, too. I remember seeing a blue supra (visionboy.com i think) doing 10 or even 9 second runs on a modified auto. Thats about as fast as any other "very fast" street car and its a reliable automatic. So autos are no longer 'worse' in that context.

dude thats like getting a fkn auto EX civic........why would you get an automat car that has vtec? asuming your going to race n ****, automatic is CRAP. my old civic (02 lx auto) with an aem v2 hit a amazing 18.6 @ 74mph while my friend stock lx 2dr stick hit a better time than me, why would you get an automatic in a 2door car thats meant for speed? and dont compare a fukin benz to a damn vw r32 you dumbfuks......thats like comparing shaq to jordan, doesn't happen there.

You do realize that some people want the car, but don't like the working involved in driving a manual. Also alot of people are terribly uncoordinated and cannot drive a manual. If they still want the car then they can get the auto.

Don't try and tell me an automatic transmission on a VW R32 is stupid because you would want a manual. The world doesnt revolve around you.

And if you want to race the thing, there is a good chance the auto will be faster if its geared the same.

Ive seen 6 speed auto cars that have 6 speed manual counterparts.
New Lexus IS250 for example
I quote from their website on all the auto ISs "6-Speed Sequential-Shift Automatic"

Auto final drive: 3.90:1
Manual final drive: 3.72:1

So probably in a race the auto would win cause lower gears are probably almost the exact same thing. And top end the auto can go a little faster.

Yeah, but they don't put the high end DSG into all their cars, the cheaper ones have SportTronic or whatever the hell they call it. DSG basically means 0 lag between gear shifts, the car has the next gear ready...

I have an auto EX civic, whats wrong with it. Sometimes my dad drives my car and he doesn't know how to drive stick. Plus I like having a sunroof.

I like the way the new VW looks, seen a GTI on my block and its pretty sweet.
