The new 06 civic sucks
Well i have a 2006 si and i also had a 2001 honda civic ex. My mom has the 2001 ex right now and i love both cars. I think each has it's ups and downs and why dont we just agree to that. Both cars in my opinion look really nice. The old ex has something about it, its a cheap car yet looks expensive. And the 06 si also looks awsome. The interior took a bit to get used to be now i would never go back. As far as a comparison of refinement, hp, handling, everythign but looks, well you cant compare the two. The only thing that can be compared b/w the 2 is how they look and that is all personal preferance and pretty much anyone here is going to be biased beacsue they own a 7th gen civic.

i test drove one back in december just to compare to my civic. i've just got to say i would gladly take my civic over any 8thgen. apparently the dealership hooked me up with a dude that was an expert on the new civics because he was trained on it and he got to go to a 2006 civic test-n-drive thing..
when i popped the hood to check it out (before driving it), i looked at the engine code stamp and saw "R18A-" and kinda said under my breath "hmm.. new engine design.. r series..?" and the guy heard that and said "yep.. its a new 140HP engine.." i then asked about the lack of an exhaust manifold, instead seeing one pipe exiting the block, and the guy said "i've got to tell you straight up, all these technical things you're talking about is all going over my head. i'm not too sure about the engineering of this civic.." i also hated how the engine bay was set up. as opposed to our setup (where the hood opens up and the hood hinge is basically lined up with the firewall) the firewall was 'sunk' back a good ways. it seemed as if the hood only gave you access to half the engine.
when i drove it, i told the guy that the engine/suspension response wasnt too impressive at all, and he came back and told me "its because you're used to driving a modified vehicle.." i tried a small slalom with it, and turning response was kinda slow, slower than when i was in new york and i took off the strut bar and put my suspension back to stock for a day. it was only a day because the shitty handling pissed me off. i also gunned it on an on-ramp. thats when i told the guy the new civic wasn't impressive.
also, he was trying to show off the stupid *** wipers that open from the middle and i was like "yea.. that's one of the few things i didnt like about the new civics.." he then tells me that it clears more the the windshield. there was a slight drizzle that day, so i tested that theory. sure, it may clean more of the windshield, but that big *** patch of uncleared water in the very center of the windshield just pissed me off and actually kinda blocked the view in the center.. he was also showing me many changes done to the civic, and most of the time, he ended the description of the accessory with "taken from the accord.." whatever.. sure, its all good stuff, but its more of an accord now.. also, the only differences between the ex/lx is alloy wheels, rear discs, and a sunroof (and other random cosmetic changes), and the only differences between the lx/dx is 16"s vs 15"s, and random other cosmetic changes, too..
whatever..
cliff's notes: to me, 7thgen>>>>8thgen (dx/lx/ex), 8thgen is more of an accord
i havent been able to drive a new SI yet, so this rant only applies to the ex/lx/dx models

haha.. i let him know how i felt. half the time i was telling him stuff he was dumbfounded that i had some knowledge about cars. his universal response was "well, you drive a modified vehicle and all those performance modifications you've done to your car dont let you appreciate the car as it is.." or something along the lines of that

the 7thgen si was a disaster. they went from the best si in 2k to the worst all in one year. never thought it was possible for honda but they did it.

yeah, i have a 06 si and that is kind of a pain in the a$$ but i wouldnt trade it for anything. And i dont know what 0-60 is on both cars exactly, buy my old ex was around 11 seconds, the new ex is about 8, and the Si is about 6.7
I personally dont like how the 06 ex looks, i love the 06 Si. But as far as performance the 7thgen is left in the dust. Lets face it, every member here with a stock unmodded ex has been killed by any car out there, even mini vans. I know becasue i had an 01 ex with aem intake and maglanflow muffler and i was i had no chance against anything out there. I was being beatin by some mini vans.

And the two-tier dash is simply awesome, because you can see the speed of your car in your peripheral vision as you drive. I can't go back to my 02 LX. Steering wheel too small? That's for easier driving--many sports cars have smaller diameter steering wheels. As far as the front windshield looking like a mini-van, what the heck minivan has a sharper raked windshield than an NSX?
You go on ahead thinking your D17 civic kills a R18 (cus u know, that engine responds so well to mods).

I've never driven one but I really like the new Si looks like. The regular ex/lx/dx...hmmm...not that great.
I just sold my 02 civic and I'm in the market for a new car, but I would never buy the 8th gen. Not even the Si.

yeah personaly for me the 8th gens as a whole just do SUCK. Im not one for that spaced out wacked design they decided to call a civic, but hey it will apeal to someones eye.. Just like a 22" spinner on a raised 86 chevy monte carlo. Hey what ever floats your boat. However i will give credit where credit is do, honda did finaly decide to put the si back in its place. Back to the sedan and coupe, which in my opinion is a lot better looking than those damb hatchback. The only bad thing about them is how honda made all the 8th gens harder to modify. Jackson racing on the other hand is developing a new supercharger for the Si modle... *Which would have made my life a whole lot eaisier. But hey cant say easy is the best root...* But for nowo i cant say that I 100% hate them but i cant say i really like um eaither.

and is it just me or does it look like the engine is kinda naked like it needs another cover where all those coil wires are. and then everything is kinda thrown in the middle like the evap canister, alt, and 02 sensor. i think the 7thgen engine is much more user friendly. you just open and everything has a place. And there isn't a bunch of crap all over cause everything is well hidden.

****'s hella true gearbox..
i got a question.. what would happen if you needed an engine swap in the 06? you'd have to prolly drop the sub-frame and everything, support the engine, and raise the chassis to drop the engine out the bottom, right?

You guys are picking up on the most retard imperfections on the 8th gen civic. Like the rad hose touching the intake hose, who cares? It's not like the 1.8l engine is made for speed so what difference is the heat that is trasfered from the rad hose to the intake hose gonna make, NONE!!!. And if you think the rad hose is going to melt it or something that's even funnier. I will admit cooler air going into the engine is more efficient for power and everything but comon its a 1.8l 140hp engine, it doesnt have power to begin with just like the old 127hp ex that has even less power and intake resonators up the a$$. If i were to pick out every small detail like that on every car i think i would never buy one because i would find 100 things wrong with it. What about the shitty access to the alternator on the old ex, what about the fact that it had no inner wheel wells and every puddle you go through soaked the engine.
I have yet to see a 7thgen civic with inner wheel wells complelty isolating the engine compartment. I dunno maybe some are different but i can access the back of my engine through the wheel well on a 2001 ex.
Granted if your buying a performance car like a 350z or a Corvette yeah i would look how the intake is rounted to make sure its drawing in cold air because those engines will make full use of that cold air coming in. But on a civic stock air box that difference will maybe be 1hp if that from hot to cold air.
wow, this topic is great...
...my biggest complaint is that the classical gauges are gone and it seems like honda wants their new civic to be just like the corola, boring and not sporty. the si is nice but the interior still sucks. my suggestion to anyone who wants to invest in a 2 door civic, get a rsx, any one who wants to get a four door civic get a 7th gen. i am not bias about 7th gen civics but the fact of the matter is the honda civic is not what it used to be, it is beginning to target a different crowd of people...boring people who like crazy modern interiors...
