A cop radar thing....a Radar Detector??? I have a Bel 980, I swear by the Bel's but others will say Passport or V1, which are both good units too. Runs around $300. The cheap ones are exactly that. Cheap. Dont know about CA laws, NY they are legal

Lol ya. It's called a radar detector.
YES! it is illegal in the state of California.
Laser Jammers and Radar Jammers are illegal in the states of Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.
I dont know what the fine is, but in Cali, be prepared to pay a few grand.
Plus most of them dont even work.

From what I understand, jammers are almost universally illegal and generally aren't covered in traffic acts so much as telecommunications acts as devices that emit harmful interferrance. You can't just jam whatever frequency you feel like, they regulate the hell out of them.

Hey man, it's not cool to just post what you think & passing them off as facts.

http://www.ncsl.org/programs/transportation/radar.htm

Scroll down. Under Table 1: Radar Detector Laws, you'll find:
CALIFORNIA: Not regulated

Yeah, I know it's dated 1998 but if you disagree, find something that says radar DETECTORS are illegal in Cali.

Local Walmart, Best Buy, Target, etc. sells them.

they do work for those of you who think that they dont. you just have to be willing to pay up for them. a couple of my friends have what's supposedly the best on the market, cost them around $400 ish i think. it can distinguish between cop radars and other radar's. and it beeps like crazy when you get somewhere near a cop, and they haven't gotten tickets since they've gotten them

On the And1 Mixtape DVD, DJ Whokid had a Navi that had some sort of detector that showed exactly which streets the "emergency vehicles" were... I want one of those!

Do you even live in Cali??
Maybe i didn't say it clear enough. Radar detectors and radar jammers are different things. It is completely legal to purchase and possess a radar detector. However, it is illegal to use them! Yes it's pretty dumb. You can buy it, but you can't use it. Why? Technically, it is legal and it's "not regualted." But on the other hand, if you have it operated in your car, it is obstructing justice, preventing an officer to do his job, which is to catch speeders. So, therefore, IT IS ILLEGAL!
Radar detectors do work, but only if you pay top money for them. If the cops catch you using it, they will conficated it, and write you a ticket. 1998 is 8 years ago!! Laws change on a yearly basis. Besides anyone could put any bullshit on a website, it aint hard.

Now radar/laser jammers are different, and they are illegal in many states, and many of them don't work! But if caught using them, you can be fine up to 75 big ones.

This is the laws in California as far as i know.

radar detectors are fine in california. its marketed as safety devices cuz you could use it to recieve weather warnings and road emergencies. Sometimes digital road signs give off radar signals to alert of accidents ahead. I noticed alot of that on i80 in norcal. although i stopped using it in the last 3 years cuz im in socal, i cant speed cuz well, traffic is too slow hahaha.

If thats all you know then you don't know anything. It is legal to use radar detectors. If a police officer see's your radar detector they will not conficate it. I've been pulled over 6times already for my tint and they saw my radar detector and didn't cared about it.

It is illegal to have radar jammers.

Directly from the CHP website

http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html

Radar detectors are legal, but jammers, or any device which interferes with radar signals, are illegal (28150 VC).
Get your facts straight before you start flaming people and spread misinformation. The link i found is on the forum stickies in the legal section. Do a search people before you post this crap.

Anyways as for radar detectors, you buy the very best or dont buy one at all.

Suggestions, Escort 8500 x50, Valentine 1, and Beltronics x65 pro. All in the $220-$300 range on ebay.

I bought the Escort Passport 8500 x50, the H.A.R.D (Helmet Assisted Radar Detection) and a 13mm Stem Mount for my motorcycle (GSXR-750). I paid a little over $500 for the setup and it rocks! Gotta have a radar detector on a fast machine. I use the Passport 8500 in my car too when I'm not driving my bike, it works great and I live by it. I'm on my 3rd Escort 8500 because they keep getting stolen from me, I'm hoping the most recent one I bought will last more then a year. If anyone else has a bike and wants a radar detector to use with it check out this site, they are located here in AZ and have it all for you.
