:( VTEC-E
so what is everyone's opinion on VTEC-E?....is the upper RPM performance comparable to the VTEC on the 6th gen EX?...i read the entire VTEC explanation site, thought it was great...then i read the VTEC-E part that applied to me, and i got a bit disappointed....so if you know any more info on our VTEC-E system, i wanna know...i guess this is even more reason for me to get some mods.

Acutally, you are both wrong, our cars have a combination of VTEC and VTEC-E. We had a three-stage VTEC system, stage 1 is 3000rpm and below, operating on 8-valves standard lift like the HX does... after that until 4500rpm is 16 valve standard lift... this is just like the HX until 4500ish when it goes into 16-valve high lift cam profile. Which is why our cars have better gas mileage than old EX's with the same amount of power. As long as you keep it below 3k at all times, you can get the same mileage as an HX.

Hook up a diagnostic computer to your car and you will see that there are three stages. Even if that wasnt so, our cars being so slow below 3k rpm is a dead giveaway.

i wish that was true, but i dont think it is, or i would be getting much better gas mileage. im almost always under 3k rpms, and the most ive gotten is 36mpg

well, i have a 2k1 EX auto to answer the first qustion from the beginning of the thread.......i'm still confused about which VTEC the EX's have. As we all probably know, the Honda site says VTEC-E, but i personally think its a combinaion of VTEC-E and SOCH VTEC from the 6th gen EX, because we have the same horsepower. But as pointed out on the VTEC explanation site, there should be three distinct steps....someone pointed those out in the thread. I keep trying to find a site that says what system we have, but i'm having no luck. I wanna keep this thread going and hopefully someone can post a link or something where we can all read the information to find out what we've got....its a mystery to me.
I think Nitehawk is right. We just have regular SOHC VTEC. No VTEC-E and no 3-stage. Check this site link :
<< All the work Honda has done on the VTEC mechanism are combined to make the 3-Stage VTEC system. It is not a rumor, the engine exists: D15B. The engine is used in Honda Civics in Europe and Japan. In short, it combines VTEC-E and SOHC VTEC to get both extraordinarily good RPM fuel economy, and excellent high RPM power. The D15B is a 1.5L engine that is capable of about 54mpg and is rated for about 128HP. There is no other engine that can boast such combination of good fuel economy and power output. >>
I emailed the owner of the asia.vtec.net site and he actually got back to me. This is what he said on how we can tell by ourselves whether or not we have 3-stage vtec :
<< The best way to determine if your engine is 3-stage is to check for the vtec solenoids. There should be two of them. For SOHC engines, they will be located on the top of the intake runners. >>
Not too sure where the intake runners are though...
