Driving beyond E

When the "fill-in-gas" light came on, the gas-gauge needle had about reached the red-line. I drove 20+ miles to the next gas station and only managed to pump-in 11.5 gallons!? The car is supposed to have a capacity of 13.5, so that means we can really drive quite a while before it sputters. Anyone else have any similar experience?

i used to have a '00 civic and there was this trick i used to do. when the gas light came on, i would take my foot off the gas, and the light would go out. then like 10 minutes later it would come back on and i would do the same thing. point being the gas ligt is annoying because you can still drive for awhile and have gas even with the light on. but it was a fun trick and the new ones don't do it. i used to trick myself into not buying gas for awhile. good when you're broke.

Hills could screw it up. I filled mine when the light came on but I only put 9.5 gallons in there, haha!

Yeah me too! I used to freak out when the gas light comes on when I'm at school 25 miles away from my house. Nowadays I let it go for 20 or so miles before I fill it up again and get about 11.5 or 11.6 gallons. The mileage on these cars are beautiful.

What happens to me a lot is that I drive home and the needle is at 1/4. I park at some crappy spot and wait for a better spot when the stores close coz I live in a busy street. I then move my car 200 feet to it's favorite spot in front of my house, the needle is almost in the red and the gas light comes on. So the next morning I'd better visit the gas-station. Not. Because when I get in my car the next day the needle is back at about 1/4 and I can drive to work without ending at the side of the road. And when I fill up I can only get about 75% in there.
One thing's for sure, I don't trust the needle/light one bit, and it's better to fill up when it passes 50% just to be sure.

theres nothing wrong with driving past E, u still got plenty of gas left. when your car stops in the middle of the road thats when u need to start worrying, but then if u wait awhile and start up the car again u can still go.

I've heard that driving your car on little gas is bad for it. Cause the are impurites in the gas that settle to the bottem of the tank. And its bad for your car to burn on that.

actually its 13.2 gallons

my gas light seems to come on when ive used about 10.5 gallons, so i can go well beyond that without worrying, on my last tank in ended up putting 12.2 gallons in, went more than 50 miles after the light came on
