oem crank pulley trashed after almost 50k miles

oem crank pulley trashed after almost 50k miles
Is this possible? Some kind of defect? I looked at my old crank pulley before throwing it in the trash and it was completely rusted over with flakes of metal all over peeling off. The rubber damper was also cracked and frayed. Does it really break down that fast? The new one I had put on seems alot better, its black and doesn't seem like it would rust. But wow just a reminder to change your pulley when you do a timing belt.
