pit stops
when you make a pit stop in Nascar or Indy racing, do you lose your standing position in the race? for example, lets say you were in first place, and you had to make a pit stop, does the person who was in second place get bumped up to first place (assuming that he passes you while your in the pit)?
ive been watching these races on tv for a while now, but i still dont quite understand how it works. maybe i dont understand it cuhz i tend to switch channels every 10 minz or something

Yes, if you're in the pit, you lose your place unless you beat everyone behind you back out (this only happens in Formula 1). Thing is, everyone has to pit a given number of times because the car only goes so far. So you hear the Nascar television announcers talk about the "Pit cycle" or "pit sequence" Say Tony stewart, Mark Martin, Dale Jarrett and Jeff Gordon are running 1,2, 4, and 7. Stewart pits, Martin takes the lead (Unless he follows which is usually what happens), jarrett moves to 3rd and Gordon to 6th. Stewart takes the position of where he falls back in line. But by the time everyone stops, Stewart ends up somewhere back up near the top because everyone has to stop and get gas and tires.
