yup you do, but mines dont have to, because i have remote start. the clutch sensor is tricked to where it seems like you applied stepping on the clutch

depends on how old the car was. Newer cars are required by law to have a safety switch that when you go to start your car, either you have to press the brake to start it, or hold down the clutch in a manaul tranny. As automatics have a switch that prevents you from putting it into gear unless you press the brake and manauls have a neutral safety switch so it can only be started with the clutch pedal pushed in. they did this because people used to start there car in and would go through walls, crash, etc...

Now the only other way is if you rig the system to override those switches.

they arent tricked to where is seems like you are stepping on it the whole clutch and that safety feature has to be overrided in order for the remote starter to work basically its forced to work like an automatic car and the car thinks it has no clutch when its being started. Sorry it probably sounds like what u meant but i just wanted to get a lil more in detail with it. I too dont need a clutch i have a remote starter to override mine

you can remove that if you want. There is a little yellow harness near the pedal what is activated when the clutch is pushed in allowing the car to start. If you cut that harness off and cross those two wires, it thinks the switch is always closed, there for no need to hold the clutch to start the car. Its only for safety anyways. The plus side is you can install remote start, or start your car from the passenger seat.

what I mean to say is there is a switch that only allows you to start with the clutch pedal pushed in. It is called a clutch safety switch, clutch interlock switch, neutral safety switch, all serve the same basic purpose. Sorry if it came out wrong, they can be started in any gear though.

Is the transmission going bad if its hard to shift into first? Cuz last night I was having an especially hard time (jus once) trying to get it into first from start and today had a lil problem going to second from first once also.

use a bike its the same concept as clutch and gas, when one foot is down the other one's up, and u have to synchronize them with ur feet to get the car moving.

If you have access to a video camera, and you can get someone to help, then I think the ideal visual aid is a video of the shifting process. I've tried to describe it to people, but they usually don't get it until they actually watch me shift, then they usually say something like, "Oh, THAT'S what you were talking about!"

can someone please explain why the car is more prone to jerk when shifting to second gear instead of the higher gears?

my friend says it's because the rpms aren't kept constant and can drop when you let go of the gas to shift to second. he said just blip the gas a little when you are holding the clutch down before shifting to 2nd. however, other people say they just hold the clutch halfway and gas as if it were 1st gear and trying to make it catch. which one is better for the clutch?

thanks

because the relationship between the speed of the wheels and the engine is greater in lower gears. So its going to have the largest reaction.
not all cars must have the clutch in to start. I had an 82 f-100 that had a strong enough starter where you could put it in gear and the starter would do the equivalent of push starting it with the clutch let out.

practice on a real car. there is no susbstitution for experience. good luck. it took me about 3 days to stop chirping in 1st. took a week to quit stallin. the rest you learn as you go.

dead *** took me 2 days (combined total of like 3 hours) in my buddys accord to not stall and get it into 1st and upshift and downshift perfect. Its almost like I had done it before. Guess he was just a good teacher.

In response to the post above about going into second, when I drive his car and when he was teaching me, he always told me when u shift to second, clutch in, shift, lil gas and lift clutch half way till it catches and then let go of it. This is for normal driving of course.

Screw parents of course, according to them in only 18 and driving a manual is very very dangerous, even though they sure as hell knew I understood and could drive it fine.

Well Im only at 2800 miles in my civic, Im waitin til 10K or 15K and then manual swap, here I come.
Im tired of the car driving itself. I cry every time I see only 2 pedals.

for a visual aid, find one of those racing vids they have floating around that shows like 3 camera angles in one frame..the padal, the shifter and the driver. i learned heel/toe by watching rally racers this way

Check out my thread on driving manual transmissions, it may interest you guys. I know some of you have already read it, and would appreciate it if you would pass it along. I would like it to be stickied because every week maybe even more often someone asks the same questions,
